I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and have already noticed that some parts, especially the doors and drawers, tend to loosen over time. I am very interested in how this popular furniture classic can be made more durable with simple measures. What actions, such as regularly tightening screws, avoiding high humidity, or other care tips, have proven effective in practice? Are there any preventative tips to ensure the wardrobe stays stable from the start? My goal is to keep the Hemnes in good condition for as long as possible without having to constantly repair it. I look forward to well-founded and practically tested advice.

Proper care is especially important for furniture like the Hemnes, which is made of solid wood. It is often overlooked that furniture also breathes and can warp due to changing environmental conditions.

Another tip: if the drawers become loose, small wooden shims or felt strips can be placed in the tracks to improve the fit and reduce play.

Under heavy use, adding extra angle brackets inside the furniture can help; these are usually invisible and strengthen the structure.

Is your wardrobe placed directly against an exterior wall? In that case, relocating it is advisable to better compensate for temperature fluctuations.

This is an important aspect of furniture care that is often overlooked. Direct contact with cold exterior walls can lead to increased moisture absorption and, over time, damage the wood.

Additionally, I recommend not placing heavy objects on the doors, as the weight can strain the hinges and wood, potentially causing warping.

Regularly tightening the screws on hinges and drawers is essential.

Avoid moisture and do not place furniture in direct sunlight.

This will keep Hemnes stable for the longest time.

Exactly. One more technical tip: when tightening screws, use the appropriate tool, preferably a torque wrench, to avoid over-tightening and thus damaging the wood threads.

Additionally, I recommend adjusting the hinges if the door is significantly warped. IKEA’s instructions provide guidance on how to finely adjust the doors both horizontally and vertically – this ensures a perfect fit and prevents unnecessary stress on the material.

How often do you use the cabinet? This also affects the wear on the moving parts.

Thank you for asking. It is used daily, mainly the drawers, which are opened and closed several times a day. The doors are used less frequently but still regularly. I will definitely try your advice about retightening with a torque wrench and applying a wood stain treatment. Adjusting the hinges also sounds very promising.

I am also interested to know if you have any specific instructions or tool recommendations that work particularly well for the Hemnes, especially for DIY enthusiasts without professional equipment.
