Hello everyone, I’m considering how to customize IKEA Hemnes furniture with fabrics in a way that doesn’t permanently alter them or look unprofessional. Specifically, I want to combine the typical wood finish with fabric elements like upholstery, covers, or textile details to give the furniture a cozier, more personal touch. Does anyone have experience or tips on which types of fabrics work well, the best methods to attach them (e.g., gluing, sewing, stapling), and whether there are alternative, reversible techniques that won’t affect the original condition of the furniture? Thanks for any advice and examples!
Additionally: Fabrics with a weave density over 200 g/m² (6 oz/yd²) are recommended for upholstery, as they are durable and do not stretch out easily. For Hemnes doors, you can use so-called "tension rods" inside the cabinet to clamp fabric strips or panels, which leaves no residue. The color and pattern of the fabrics should be matched to the wood tone to maintain the character of the furniture.
So, I simply stapled roughly foam-padded cushions with covers around them to my Hemnes bed boxes. It was really quick and looks very cozy. For cabinets, I used loose jersey slipcovers that I pull over the fronts, which are removable and easy to wash. This way, you get a great change and can switch it up depending on your mood. Give it a try, it’s fun! 😄
Thank you all in advance! Wesley, thanks for the tip about natural materials and reversible methods. The idea of using hook-and-loop fasteners and stretch covers sounds very practical. I find the magnetic tape technique mentioned by RNbei Kinbu interesting – could that work with Hemnes drawers as well? It's especially important that the furniture isn’t damaged since it belongs to the landlord. It’s better to avoid any risky methods. Has anyone had positive experience with magnetic tapes on drawers or doors?

Has anyone had positive experience using magnetic strips on drawers or doors?Yes, I have had good results, especially with furniture that has flat, smooth interior surfaces. You attach the magnetic strip to the back of fabric panels and to the inside of the door. The adhesion is strong enough to hold lightweight fabrics without leaving marks. Drawer interiors are often a bit narrower, so it’s best to use thin magnetic strips and lightweight fabrics.
