ᐅ What to do if IKEA HEMNES doors do not fit properly into the frame?

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Hemnes cabinet doors. Specifically, the doors on my 2-door HEMNES cabinet do not fit properly into the frame; they stick or close crookedly, which makes the entire piece of furniture look a bit untidy. I have already checked if all the hinges are correctly adjusted, but that hasn’t solved the issue. The doors appear to be misaligned in some places or not flush with the frame. My question is: what are proven steps or tips to fix this problem? Do the hinges maybe need to be replaced, or are there adjustment techniques that are commonly overlooked? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

First, check if the cabinet is level horizontally. Then adjust the hinges: height, width, depth. Remove the doors, make the adjustments, and rehang them. Done.

I understand that it is frustrating when the Hemnes doors don’t fit properly and you wonder if you did something wrong. I’ve had similar experiences and know how that feels.

Try not to stress and break the adjustment down into small steps. If you like, you can share exactly where it’s sticking or rubbing here – maybe together we can find a solution.

Hello, here is a detailed procedure on how to optimally adjust the HEMNES doors:

1. First, use a spirit level to ensure the cabinet is stable and level.
2. Remove the doors (usually possible by simply lifting them off after opening the hinges).
3. Check the hinges for a secure fit and any damage.
4. Use the adjustment screws on the hinges:
- Height adjustment: screw on the hinge plate at the cabinet frame edge.
- Lateral adjustment: screw on the hinge mount attached to the door.
- Depth adjustment: screw on the hinge joint itself.
5. Start with the height adjustment to prevent the door from sagging.
6. Then adjust sideways, and finally adjust the depth.
7. Rehang the doors and test the fit.

It is important to make adjustments in small increments and check the alignment after each change.

If there is no improvement, check the door and cabinet for warping using a ruler or a try square.

This method has proven effective multiple times.

The doors appear to be installed unevenly in some areas or are not properly aligned with the frame.

This observation suggests a noticeable asymmetry, which is usually caused by improper adjustment of the hinges or material warping. A dimensional check of the door edges should be carried out to rule out distortion due to moisture or transport damage. Alternatively, inspecting the mounting plates can also be useful to exclude loosening or displacement.

Sometimes it helps to lightly oil the hinges if they are a bit stiff.

It may sound trivial, but such a small step often saves the day! I have also made a cabinet door move more smoothly by simply rubbing a bit of deer tallow (yes, you read that right) onto the joints. 😉

Hey, a quick follow-up after giving it some more thought:

A really practical approach is to first take the doors completely off their hinges and then check the edges with a try square or a ruler. If the door itself isn’t flat, adjusting the hinges won’t help much.

Sometimes I’ve gently pushed a slightly warped door back into shape by hand and rehung it – this can at least provide a temporary fix until you get a replacement.

So keep at it, it’s worth it – and your furniture will look great afterwards!
