ᐅ How long does the IKEA Hemnes typically last with heavy use?

Hello everyone,

I am considering getting some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series, specifically cabinets and dressers. Since I plan to use the furniture quite intensively – meaning daily use, sometimes with higher stress from frequent storing and rearranging, and occasionally as a surface for relatively heavy items – I am interested in how long IKEA Hemnes typically lasts under heavy use.

Does anyone have experience with whether the furniture holds up well or if there are noticeable signs of wear after just a few years of daily use? Information on possible repairs or known weak points would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you all for the helpful feedback!

In summary, Hemnes seems to hold up well for about 5 to 8 years with regular use and some maintenance, provided that permanent overloading is avoided and loose screws are tightened promptly.

I find the note about moisture important, as I often live in an older apartment with less consistent humidity levels. I will definitely pay more attention to that.

Does anyone have experience with repairs on the wood itself or advice on how to fix minor dents or scratches in pine wood? I would prefer not to have to discard a dresser after just 2 years simply because of some small damage.

Minor damage such as scratches or dents can usually be repaired using wood filler or wax sticks matched to the wood color. Light sanding and repainting is also possible if done carefully.

For larger cracks or deep damage, I recommend stabilizing the affected area with wood glue and, if necessary, reinforcing it with small wooden dowels.

It is important to address small defects promptly before they worsen.

I wanted to emphasize once again how important it is to approach the lifespan realistically. IKEA offers Hemnes as affordable solid wood furniture – great for many, but not professional-grade quality.

All the better if, with some care and maintenance, the furniture can be used for a long time. This is certainly possible with Hemnes, as confirmed by several people here.

It’s good that you are asking such specific questions and are already considering repair options.

One more tip: regularly check the screws, and if a drawer squeaks, simply apply some graphite powder or candle wax to the runners. Very effective.
