Hello everyone, I am currently planning to modify my Ikea PAX wardrobe with sliding doors and found that many guides are either too general or lack sufficient detail. Therefore, I would like to ask here in the forum specifically for experiences and instructions:
How can I convert an Ikea PAX wardrobe with sliding doors myself so that the doors run smoothly, the modification is done without damaging the carcass, and the tracks are mounted neatly?
I am fairly proficient technically but have only installed standard PAX doors so far and now want to switch explicitly to sliding doors. I am especially interested in:
- Which tools and materials are needed?
- What is the detailed process for removing the old doors and preparing the carcass?
- Are there any special considerations for installing the upper and lower tracks?
- What should I pay attention to so that the doors do not stick or catch later on?
I look forward to constructive and as detailed as possible answers that will help me carry out this modification step by step safely and properly.

- Remove old doors and inspect the cabinet for any damage.
- Clear out internal fittings for unrestricted access.
- Align the top and bottom tracks precisely with a spirit level and secure them using the original drill holes.
- For wide cabinets, install an additional cross brace.
- Install the doors with the provided fittings and adjust them using the adjustment screws.
- Test the sliding operation and slightly tighten or loosen screws if necessary.
An important detail: Use the assembly materials recommended by the manufacturer, as they differ from standard screws. The correct anchors/screws ensure long-lasting stability and load capacity.
Also, check that there are no paint or veneer damages in the track attachment areas before assembly.

I find the tips here really helpful, but I also want to encourage you: if you take it step by step and don’t rush the installation, the sliding doors usually work out very well.
When I first remodeled a Pax closet with sliding doors, I was also surprised at how delicate the tracks can be. In the end, the most important thing is to carefully measure and adjust every single screw.
If you notice that you’re stuck or feeling uncertain, just take a short break and double-check everything. No one expects you to get everything perfectly right the first time.
I’m looking forward to hearing how your renovation goes – feel free to let us know if you run into any issues or problems.

If you realize you’re stuck or unsure about something, just take a short break and review it again.Thank you, that really puts me at ease, because when planning, you often sit in front of the cabinet with some uncertainty, wondering if you’re forgetting something or doing something wrong.
I will start by removing the interior, then take off the old doors and begin installing the tracks – as recommended, with great care and a level.
If I encounter any problems during the assembly or adjustment of the sliding doors, I’ll gladly come back here.
Thanks to everyone for the helpful and clear advice!
