Hello everyone, I am currently planning my modern kitchen and want to use Ikea Metod cabinets with sliding doors. My specific question is: How do I assemble the Metod carcasses and especially the sliding doors so that they operate smoothly and are stable? I have some experience with Ikea furniture, but I’m not very familiar with sliding doors for kitchen units, as they are mounted differently than regular hinged doors. I would also appreciate tips on modern kitchen design, particularly on how to combine storage space effectively with sliding doors without making it too complicated or compromising the overall look. Does anyone have experience or instructions on how to approach building the cabinet carcasses and sliding doors? Thanks for any advice!

With sliding doors, always build the cabinet carcass precisely first, as the doors will not operate smoothly otherwise. The screws for the running rails should be tightened securely but can be loosened slightly for adjustment. It is best to remove the doors during the initial setup and then align everything carefully at your convenience.

I initially had trouble aligning the sliding doors on my Ikea kitchen with Metod cabinets. At first, they worked smoothly, but after a few weeks, they became stiff. In the end, what helped me was to thoroughly check the tracks again and make sure the floor was completely level. Sometimes small details get overlooked, but they make a big difference. Don’t worry, this is normal during the first installation – just keep at it and readjust as needed.

For the sliding doors: insert the rollers into the bottom parts of the doors; the top usually has guide rails for hanging. The cabinet has rails attached at the top and bottom. Make sure there is an even gap to the front, otherwise the doors will hit each other.

Thank you, that’s a very useful tip. I often forget how important floor levelness is.

Is there a standard gap that I should maintain here, or does it depend on the model?

Basically, I’m somewhat reassured because it seems the installation system for the sliding doors consistently uses clips and screws, but you do need to work carefully.

The gap between the sliding doors should be at least 3 to 5 mm (0.1 to 0.2 inches) to prevent them from touching. The tracks are often designed so that the gap is determined by the fittings, so it is important to follow the instructions very carefully. It is best to measure everything thoroughly before installation to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Here’s a casual tip about kitchen planning with Metod sliding doors: Use the cabinets with sliding doors for areas you access frequently, like spices or coffee supplies. This way, you save space and avoid having doors get in the way while cooking.

And for the look: sliding doors add a special touch to a modern kitchen – almost like a surprise element in the room’s overall impression. If you like, you can even mix different colors or fronts to keep things from looking too plain.
