Kaupin66Hello everyone, I recently installed an IKEA Metod kitchen with drawers and have noticed that some of the drawers do not slide as smoothly and quietly as I had hoped. In particular, the drawer runners sometimes feel a bit stiff and produce knocking or scraping noises when opening and closing. I suspect that adjustments or maintenance of the Metod drawer slides could help make the operation quieter and smoother. Does anyone have experience with this and can provide specific tips on how to adjust the IKEA Metod drawers for smooth and quiet movement, as well as recommend maintenance steps to keep these qualities lasting?
The smooth operation of Metod drawers usually depends on the cleanliness of the sliding rails. Clean the rails thoroughly with a dry cloth and avoid using water. Lubricate only with a very small drop of silicone oil or graphite powder; never use oil- or grease-based products.
To adjust the Metod drawer slides, you should first check whether the drawers are properly aligned. IKEA states that the Metod drawers can be adjusted laterally and vertically to achieve an optimal fit. Small lateral misalignments often lead to increased friction and, consequently, noise. For maintenance, it is recommended to clean the runners with a lint-free cloth and use a silicone-based lubricant, as other lubricants tend to attract dirt and can impair function over time.
I am familiar with this issue, as I installed my Metod kitchen about a year ago. What helped me was completely removing the drawers and carefully cleaning the runners from dust and small wood chips. It is also important to gently tighten any loose screws—excessive force can worsen the sliding action. Sometimes it is a matter of getting used to it, but overall, regular maintenance is worthwhile to ensure a smooth and comfortable use over time.

Use just a very small drop of silicone oil or graphite powder for lubrication; definitely avoid oil- or grease-based products. Could you please specify which lubricant you are using? Are there any particular brands you would recommend? I have various products here but am unsure about their compatibility with the plastic components of the tracks. Also, I am curious about how often such lubrication is needed when the drawers are used under normal load.Regarding lubrication: A silicone spray based on PTFE is ideal because it is water-repellent and does not promote dust adhesion. Under normal use, application is usually limited to once or twice a year. It is important to thoroughly clean the sliding rails before applying to remove old dirt and residues. This type of lubrication protects against permanent wear and keeps operating noise low.
