Annikari713 Oct 2016 14:07Hello everyone, I recently purchased a kitchen with Ikea Metod drawers and have realized that maintenance and care of these drawers are quite important in daily use to preserve their functionality and durability. However, I can hardly find any detailed DIY guides or practical advice on how to clean, lubricate the drawer slides, or perform minor repairs yourself without having to contact customer service right away. Does anyone here have experience or know of well-structured, hands-on instructions for maintaining Ikea Metod drawers? I would appreciate any tips or even step-by-step guides that can be easily done at home.
Hello Annikari7, I think your question is very important because the Metod cabinet systems do have a solid construction, but without proper care and maintenance, the drawer mechanisms can cause problems over time.
Generally, I recommend the following DIY maintenance procedure:
- First, remove all drawers completely. With Metod, this usually works by unlocking the runners with a small lever. Be careful not to pull with force, as the runners have locks.
- Clean the runners with a lint-free cloth and a mild cleaning agent; do not apply oil directly, as it will attract dirt!
- Then apply a thin, light layer of dry lubricant (e.g., silicone grease), no thick lubricating oil, as it can trap dirt.
- Check the plastic parts for cracks or wear, especially the stoppers and buffers.
- Check if the drawers are still properly aligned. Metod often allows adjustments on the runner and front panel.
If you like, you can describe the problem in more detail: is something squeaking? Is a drawer sticking? Then I can give you more specific advice.
Have you already tried removing the runners to inspect their condition? In my opinion, that is the first step for maintenance.

BASTIANTI13 Oct 2016 16:43Great question! I love doing hands-on work myself, and I can only encourage you to regularly maintain the Metod drawers. It’s really fun once you know how! 😄
If you’re looking for a step-by-step guide, here’s a rough overview of how I do it:
- Carefully remove the drawer (always press the small lever)
- Clean off old grease and dust with a soft cloth
- Lubricate dry or with a small amount of silicone grease
- Reinsert the drawer
- Adjust (usually with small screws on the side)
Just give it a try! If you want, I can also write a more detailed DIY protocol. Keep us updated!

I always keep a small maintenance kit with dry lubricant and cloths handy—just in case a drawer starts to creak or becomes stiff. I find this really prevents a lot of trouble.
For anyone who wants to keep it simple, regular inspections are definitely worthwhile. You immediately feel like a furniture pro 🙂

Annikari714 Oct 2016 08:21Thank you already for the responses so far!
I can confirm a few points, for example regarding the drawer adjustment: so far, I haven’t dared to remove the drawer slides because I’m afraid I won’t be able to reinstall them properly. Is there a simple method to take out and reinstall the slides without needing a lot of tools or complicated steps?
Also, I see that the lubricant plays an important role. What exactly is the difference between “dry runner grease” and regular lubricating oils or greases? Couldn’t I just use regular multipurpose grease?
I would be very interested to hear experiences on these two points, as I’d like to take action myself but want to avoid causing any unintentional damage.

Is there a simple way to remove and reinstall the rails without using a lot of tools or complicated steps?Yes, it’s actually quite straightforward if you know how. The Metod drawers have small plastic clips or tabs on the metal sides of the runners that you gently press inward with your thumb or a small screwdriver while lifting the drawer upwards. Important: don’t pull abruptly, but steadily and evenly.

What exactly is the difference between ‘dry runner grease’ and regular oils or greases?Dry runner greases (usually based on silicone or PTFE) are specifically designed not to attract dust or dirt. Regular oils or thick greases, on the other hand, can cause dirt buildup, which leads to grime accumulation and puts long-term strain on the mechanics.
To reinstall, simply hook the runners back onto the outer frame, then carefully place the drawer and slide it in. If you want, you can slightly loosen the adjustment screws beforehand if the drawer is very stiff, and tighten them again after insertion.
