ᐅ Which type of camera is suitable for the main entrance area of a house?

Hello everyone,

We are looking for an IP camera for our driveway and entrance area. The Dahua 5442 series sounds very promising. Therefore, I have planned an IP-B5442E-ZE for the driveway area. It will be mounted in a corner at about 2.50m (8 feet) height and should cover the driveway at a 90° angle. The range required is only 10m (33 feet). Is the bullet shape suitable for this, or would an eyeball model be better?

The entrance area is much more complex. Here, at least 180° need to be covered. In addition, there are several steps leading down quite a bit. The area behind the house should also be visible if possible. Is the IPC-HDPW5442G-Z suitable for this? Or how would you best cover this area? Unfortunately, I have only installed Simplex CAT cable as you can see in the photo.

Then there simply won’t be seamless surveillance in every direction. It’s not a prison or a commercial property on the outskirts, but a single-family house in a residential neighborhood.
Position the cameras to cover typical access points, and that’s enough.
You know your surroundings better; I’m sure a burglar won’t carry your TV through a route where they have to climb over three fences and hedges, but rather along a reasonably "convenient" path. That’s where you should focus.

I agree with that. Four cameras positioned optimally and I’d be on board.
Are there any recommended complete systems (plug & play)? My previous favorite was the Bosch Smart Home Eyes, but they are ruled out due to Wi-Fi, so I’m asking about alternatives. Why do I mention Bosch? To show what kind of approach/standard I’m looking for.
Best regards, Stefan.

Regards, Stefan.

Still using the Dahua 5442 series with NVR or NAS.
Per camera costs are about €180 - 250 (around $200 - 280), NAS from about €500 (Synology DS218+ with 2x3TB). As always, no upper limit. With storage on the NVR/NAS, it obviously depends on how long you want to record. With 4 cameras at 4MP and a high FPS rate, 3TB (about 3.3TB) might just be enough for 24 hours.

Per camera costs around €180–250 (approximately $190–265), NAS starting at about €500 (Synology DS218+ with 2x3TB). Of course, there’s no upper limit. The critical factor for storage in the NVR/NAS is how long you want to record. With 4 cameras at 4MP and a high frame rate, 3TB might barely cover 24 hours.

Honestly, I have to say I’m completely overwhelmed at this point and deliberately left my response open for a long time. I’ve taken note of all the very valuable information here, but I don’t know what to do. Is it common to only record about 24 hours? What do people do when they’re on vacation? Then it just gets continuously overwritten ‍♂️

In the meantime, I was able to get the Synology DS718+ at a good price and have 2 x 4TB drives running in RAID. I always record on a rolling basis for 21 days. It should definitely be more than 24 hours.
You don’t necessarily need a very high FPS rate. I have, I think, 2 cameras with 4MP each and 15 FPS. For 21 days, that was about 960GB of data per camera.

No, recordings are naturally event-based. Unless you specifically want 24-hour recording here and there. In that case, you need to ensure sufficient hard drive capacity. But certainly not for all cameras.
