the title says it all. We are currently planning the electrical system for our new build.
The electrician has planned a Hager “technical center” with a multimedia panel. This is where the LAN cables will terminate. Additionally, I would like to install the router and a NAS (Synology 214play) there.
It looks quite neat and seems to fit everything needed, but does this make sense?
Today, I was wondering why I wasn’t offered a server cabinet.
What are your experiences? What makes more sense? How does it affect the cost?
I would be very grateful for some advice.

Daniel-Sp12 Aug 2020 05:57It depends on what else is planned. If a small home server for a family cloud or anything else is going to be added later, space can become tight quickly. You are more flexible with a network cabinet; if you source it yourself, you might also save some money.
So, what is planned exactly? How many LAN ports, satellite system?

For a single-family house, I personally don’t think the Hager multimedia panels are the right choice. However, it also depends somewhat on the size of the network installation. The electrician will usually handle it quickly together with the meter cabinet, but they are not concerned with what eventually needs to be installed at the endpoints.
From my point of view, the 214play does not fit well into the multimedia distribution box because it lacks sufficient depth. I also see ventilation as a potential issue. Personally, I would go for a 19-inch cabinet. Don’t forget to choose the depth and height according to the planned components and allow some extra space for future expansion.

C.beckmann198612 Aug 2020 11:52Thanks in advance for the feedback. I also think the electrician would prefer to include this in the sale. If we go with that option, he will patch the cables, and from there, I would continue the work.
If I source a server cabinet through him, will it likely be even more expensive?
If I organize it myself, he probably won’t patch the cables and won’t provide any warranty on the LAN outlets.
In the overview diagram from Hager, a NAS is also installed. The only question is whether my Synology will fit in there.
What else could/should/must I put into the server cabinet that wouldn’t fit in the Hager cabinet?
So many questions. I’m still looking forward to your opinions. Thanks in advance!
