Hello everyone,

I’m currently facing a problem with my move involving the Kallax shelving unit from Ikea. Most of the screws provided are far too short to securely connect the parts. I suspect this might be due to missing or incorrect screws, or possibly a wrong size specification. Since I don’t want to wait too long, I’m wondering if anyone has experience with which replacement screws can be bought at a hardware store instead.

Specifically: What types and lengths of screws work best for the Kallax if the original screws are too short? Does anyone have tips on what to pay special attention to when buying screws at the hardware store? Practical recommendations would be great, such as exact measurements, material, or thread types.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello lepeje,

This is unfortunately a known issue with some Kallax sets, especially if they were bought second-hand or if there were shipping errors. Generally, Ikea uses connector bolts with a 5mm diameter and a relatively short length for Kallax, since the panels aren’t very thick. If the original screws are too short, I would recommend replacing them with screws made of galvanized steel or stainless steel to prevent rusting.

If your shelving unit is made from 16mm (0.6 inch) thick panels, screws about 30–35mm (1.2–1.4 inches) long are usually appropriate, sometimes a bit longer if they need to go through multiple layers. For hardware store replacements, particleboard screws or connector bolts work well, depending on exactly which screws are missing or too short.

It’s also important that the screw heads sit flush after assembly and the threads don’t penetrate too deeply, to avoid splitting the wood. I’d start by measuring the length of the old screws with a screw gauge, then get replacement screws that are 5–10mm (0.2–0.4 inch) longer.

If you want, you can describe more precisely which parts you’re connecting and which screws don’t fit, and I can help you more specifically.

I would use galvanized chipboard screws in 4x40 mm (4x1.6 inches) from the hardware store. They are long enough and fit well. Make sure they are not too thick, otherwise the wood may split.

I would like to clarify this more technically, as the assembly is especially important for the stability of Kallax.

Typically, Kallax uses fasteners referred to in the IKEA instructions as dowels plus screws or bolts. The most suitable replacement screws are chipboard screws with a diameter of 4 to 4.5 mm (5/32 to 3/16 inch). The length should be sufficient to penetrate at least 16 mm (5/8 inch) into the wood, but not too long to avoid drilling through the opposing panel.

At hardware stores, it is advisable to choose screws with countersunk heads to allow flush mounting. Stainless steel is recommended to prevent rust if the shelf is placed in humid rooms.

If you don’t have a specific screw size, take an old screw and compare it to new screws. If possible, test the screw on a less important part of the shelf before replacing them all.

One more question: Are these original screws from the set, or has there been a retrofit? The type of dowel used can also be crucial since Kallax often uses cam connectors.

Good morning,

to solve the issue with screws that are too short for the Kallax shelf, the following systematic approach is recommended:

1. Identify the screw type: The originals are usually chipboard screws with a countersunk head and a 4 mm (5/32 inch) diameter, sometimes also cam connector screws.

2. Measure the screw length: If the screws you have are too short, determine whether the reason for the complaint is a packaging error or a wrongly assembled individual set. Measure the length including the threaded part using a ruler or caliper.

3. Obtain replacements: Purchase galvanized or stainless steel screws of the same type at a hardware store, preferably with full threading to the head. Chipboard screws sized 4x40 or 4x45 mm (4x1.57 or 4x1.77 inches) often work well because they provide enough grip.

4. Test the assembly: First, try inserting a replacement screw to ensure it does not break the wood or fail to tighten properly.

5. Check dowels and fittings: If the connection doesn’t hold due to too-short screws, check whether the dowels might be damaged or non-original, as this strongly affects stability.

Summary:
Buy 4 mm (5/32 inch) chipboard screws, 40-45 mm (1.57-1.77 inches) long, galvanized or stainless steel. Use them with a suitable countersunk head and make sure the parts are securely connected without damaging the wood.

If you have any questions or specific measurements, just ask!

Pay attention to the length of the thread and make sure the screws are not too thick. Screws that are too thick can cause the wood to split. Zinc-coated screws are better for corrosion resistance.
