Hello everyone,

I’m currently facing a problem with my move involving the Kallax shelving unit from Ikea. Most of the screws provided are far too short to securely connect the parts. I suspect this might be due to missing or incorrect screws, or possibly a wrong size specification. Since I don’t want to wait too long, I’m wondering if anyone has experience with which replacement screws can be bought at a hardware store instead.

Specifically: What types and lengths of screws work best for the Kallax if the original screws are too short? Does anyone have tips on what to pay special attention to when buying screws at the hardware store? Practical recommendations would be great, such as exact measurements, material, or thread types.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello lepeje!

We had the same issue with screws being too short during our Kallax move! 🙂

My solution was to buy replacement screws at the hardware store that matched the originals as closely as possible but were about 5-10mm (0.2-0.4 inches) longer. It was surprising how much extra stability those few millimeters added. It’s important to choose screws made of stainless steel so the shelf still looks good after long-term use. I also added a few cam lock fittings afterwards to be absolutely sure.

Tip: If you’re unsure when buying screws, just say you need screws for 16mm (0.6 inches) thick furniture panels that are long enough to securely join two panels. Most hardware store staff will understand right away.

In my opinion, it’s not worth cutting corners here. The right screws really make a difference! Good luck!
