Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into replacements and alternatives for the original Ikea Platsa furniture screws. Since it can sometimes be difficult or time-consuming to buy the exact matching screws from Ikea, I wanted to ask which alternatives you know or use that are compatible and provide the same stability and fit. It is especially important to me that the alternatives not only fit mechanically but also offer the same strength, as I am planning to modify a few modules and might rely on spare parts.

Does anyone have experience with screws from hardware stores or specific drywall screws that are comparable to those used in Platsa? I would also appreciate tips on exact dimensions, material quality, or particular types.

Thanks in advance for your help!

For Ikea PLATSA screws, you can use Euro cylinder or standard cylinder screws from the hardware store. Often, 4 mm (0.16 inches) diameter screws with the appropriate length are helpful. It is important that the screw heads remain compatible; otherwise, the furniture will not fit together precisely.

Hello Dapar,

I would like to briefly explain what to consider when looking for replacement screws for Ikea PLATSA furniture. PLATSA typically uses special connector fittings: so-called cam locks and corresponding connector dowels.

1. Screw type: These are often screws with metric threads (usually M4 or M5) that are specifically designed to fit the cam locks.
2. Length: Screws that are too long or too short can affect stability.
3. Material: Steel or galvanized steel is ideal to prevent rusting or breaking.

If you are searching for replacements, I recommend:
- Check carefully whether you need regular wood screws or the special cam lock connectors.
- Some hardware stores offer replacement sets for cam lock screws that are directly compatible.

If you like, I can prepare a list with dimensions and sources.

These cam locks and the associated screws are exactly what I mean. I have difficulty reordering the original parts from Ikea or face long delivery times. Therefore, a replacement solution would be ideal.

That would be very helpful if you could provide that. I know I specifically need the screws for the cam lock, but I don’t know the exact length and thread type of the Ikea parts by heart.

Regarding alternatives for PLATSA furniture screws: I am familiar with the issue and have tried several options.

First, about the exact dimensions: The screws for the cam lock fittings are usually M4 x 50 mm (sometimes 45 mm depending on the module). These are machine screws with fine threads. It is important that the thread is not too coarse; otherwise, the cam lock and dowel won’t engage properly.

As a replacement, I have had good experiences with metric M4 stainless steel screws, which you can find at specialized screw suppliers or well-stocked DIY stores. Rust resistance is an advantage. If you cannot get original cam locks, you can also order compatible cam locks from furniture fitting suppliers—there are standardized options available that fit if you check the measurements carefully.

Important:
- Measure the thread pitch (fine or standard thread)
- Check the screw length (50 mm is usually standard)
- Verify the head size, as IKEA often uses extra-small heads

Can you measure your existing screws? Especially length and diameter are crucial. I ask because even small differences can cause problems during assembly.

Additionally, I recommend specifically asking screw suppliers for "M4 cam screws."

If you like, I can also provide some sources in Germany.

Thanks for the detailed information. This morning I measured an original screw: it has a diameter of 4 mm (0.16 inches), a length without the head of about 48 mm (1.89 inches), and the thread is quite fine. The screw head is relatively small, round with an internal hex drive (Allen).

That’s exactly what I feared. If I use a screw with too coarse a thread, the cam lock won’t fit properly or the joint will be unstable.

Does anyone have practical advice on where I can find fine-thread screws with an internal hex drive and these dimensions? Local hardware stores often don’t carry them or only have coarse variants. I’ve checked several online shops already, but there are so many different specifications.
