Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for some time and I’m hoping for an active discussion here in the forum: Are there any practical alternatives if the inserts for the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit don’t fit in terms of size or functionality?

I really like using the KALLAX because of its flexibility, but especially with drawer or cabinet inserts, I’ve noticed that the standard options often don’t fully meet my requirements, whether it’s regarding height, interior layout, or special features.

Have you found your own solutions, perhaps alternative suppliers or even DIY projects that integrate well with the KALLAX? How do you handle the issue when the available inserts don’t fit exactly?

I often rely on flexible third-party inserts specifically designed for KALLAX. These are usually modular and can be combined. If that doesn’t fit, cutting custom inserts from durable plastic yourself also works well.

@Nakar33: You mentioned the material load – could you please explain in more detail which limits I should consider regarding weight and load capacity for KALLAX in such custom builds? I would also like to know how different materials (wood, plastic, fabric boxes) affect this.

Additionally, I am interested if anyone here has experience with a combination of original IKEA inserts and self-made components, so-called "hybrid solutions."

The KALLAX shelves themselves are quite sturdy, but the shelves and compartments are designed to hold about 13–15 kg (29–33 lbs).

When using custom constructions, you should especially pay attention to the stability of the materials: plywood or MDF with a thickness of at least 9–12 mm (0.35–0.47 inches) is recommended. Plastic should have sufficient wall thickness to prevent sagging. Also, keep in mind: the heavier the material used, the less total load you can carry overall.

One more tip: For versatile use, plastic boxes from brands like Really Useful Box are also suitable. You can fit them exactly into KALLAX compartments, and they often come with practical lids and dividers.

That’s exactly the point: Why do all the work when IKEA already offers suitable products?

I often find it excessive to build everything custom or constantly switch between DIY and prefabricated parts just because it doesn’t “fit 100%.” That’s exactly the problem with the idea of “one shelf for everything.”
