ᐅ KALLAX connections are loose after moving – what should I do?

Ewen-guHello everyone, I recently disassembled and rebuilt my KALLAX shelving unit after moving. I noticed that almost all the connectors, such as the dowels and cam locks, now fit too loosely and no longer provide a stable hold. As a result, the entire shelf feels significantly less stable than before, which concerns me. My question is: does anyone have experience with tightening these connection points again? Are there any tips or special replacement parts I can use to restore stability without having to buy a completely new shelving unit? I would appreciate any advice.
The issue of loose fasteners with KALLAX after disassembly and reassembly often stems from the material of the connectors. These are usually made of plastic, which can deform and loosen under stress. Some practical measures include:
1. Ordering replacement parts directly from IKEA to ensure original fit.
2. Alternatively, inserting plastic strips or felt pads as spacers or inserts at the connection points to reduce play.
3. Ensuring proper assembly by inserting the connectors fully and evenly.
Using adhesive is only a last resort, as it makes later disassembly more difficult.

Hey, sometimes the small plastic sleeves can expand or deform a bit during transport and assembly – everyone knows that from their furniture 😉 My tip: try tightening the sleeves a little using thin strips of cardboard or plastic. This way they stay snug without stressing the material and won’t slip out anymore. If you plan to take the shelf apart frequently, this is better than using glue. Good luck, you can do it! 🙂
Hello Ewen-gu,
I can understand how frustrating it is when the joints become loose after moving. This is often because the clamping areas of the plastic connectors expand slightly after frequent use. My advice:
- First, try gently repositioning the connection parts with some pressure; maybe they weren’t fully pushed in.
- If the fit is really too loose, replacement parts often help—some suppliers offer these connector sleeves individually.
- If small gaps remain, a flexible felt sheet can be used as a spacer to improve the fit.
I hope this helps. Good luck with the repair!
