Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for some time and I’m hoping for an active discussion here in the forum: Are there any practical alternatives if the inserts for the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit don’t fit in terms of size or functionality?
I really like using the KALLAX because of its flexibility, but especially with drawer or cabinet inserts, I’ve noticed that the standard options often don’t fully meet my requirements, whether it’s regarding height, interior layout, or special features.
Have you found your own solutions, perhaps alternative suppliers or even DIY projects that integrate well with the KALLAX? How do you handle the issue when the available inserts don’t fit exactly?

That’s exactly the point: Why do all the work when IKEA itself offers suitable products?I see it a bit differently. It always depends on individual needs. Not everyone finds the original sets suitable or practical, especially when specific sizes or compartment layouts are required.
That’s why I believe it makes sense to look for alternatives and, if necessary, build your own to get the most out of the shelving unit.
For example, I have occasionally needed custom sizes for craft supplies and technical accessories that were only achievable through self-construction.
In the end, it’s primarily about optimizing the individual use.

This helps before you buy or build something and prevents wrong purchases.
So if you are looking for inserts for KALLAX, it can be worthwhile to enter the layout of your compartments and the dimensions of the inserts there, then try out different options.
One recommendation is SketchUp or other free 3D planners that are user-friendly.
