Are there alternative baskets for the KALLAX?

I’m looking for baskets for the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit that are not only functional but also offer a different look than the original KALLAX baskets. The IKEA fabric baskets are a bit too plain and not very sturdy in my opinion, so I’m wondering if there are other options, maybe handmade or from other manufacturers, that fit easily into the standard KALLAX compartments.

It’s important to me that the baskets fit the dimensions (approximately 33x33x33 cm (13x13x13 inches) internal measurements) and are sturdy enough for everyday use. If anyone has experience, any links or tips on materials or sources would be very helpful.

Perhaps there are baskets made of wood, metal, or mixed materials? Or maybe a size slightly larger or smaller that still fits?

I welcome any ideas!

Hello Vinsan!

Your question is great because I also find the original fabric baskets to be quite basic. I’ve tried a few alternatives: for example, woven baskets made from seagrass or rattan fit perfectly into the KALLAX and instantly give the room a natural look.

They are a bit more flexible than wood but still sturdy and stylish. However, you should check the dimensions very carefully beforehand, as some are a few centimeters wider or narrower.

If you’re looking for handmade baskets, have a look on Etsy or DaWanda, where you can often find beautiful unique pieces.

A little tip: with these types of baskets, you can easily add a fabric liner if you want to keep things a bit cleaner.

Enjoy browsing! 😊

Hello everyone,

I would like to add some basic information about the dimensions and fit, as there are often misunderstandings: The KALLAX shelf measures just under 33x33 cm (13x13 inches) per compartment, with a depth of about 39 cm (15 inches). The Ikea fabric bins are quite flexible and adapt well – a rigid bin must match the exact dimensions; otherwise, it won’t fit in or come out easily.

For those interested in alternatives, I recommend baskets that have some flexibility or are slightly smaller and can slide easily into the shelf’s frame.

If you prefer wood, custom-made boxes with handles are an option, but they require more effort.

If you need more tips on measurements, just ask!

, I can confirm that I have felt baskets myself that are about 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 inches) smaller than the compartment size. This way, they slide in and out easily without damaging the shelf.

There are also metal baskets with a powder coating that roughly fit if they are square-shaped. However, these are open and better suited for items that need ventilation. The advantage is that they are very sturdy and tidy.

I would recommend specifically searching for "baskets compatible with KALLAX" as there are now several suppliers offering products designed for this purpose.

That’s brilliant! 😍

I recently bought bamboo baskets that fit perfectly into the compartments of the KALLAX and look really stylish! Add a few colorful fabric inserts, and the room instantly feels much more inviting.

If the original baskets seem too dull, definitely go for natural materials – they really bring life into the space. Plus, the baskets are very sturdy!

I’m glad this is such an interesting topic here. I think it really makes a difference. 🙂

I got some willow baskets that are beautifully handwoven. They are sturdy, durable, and have a pleasant weight. What’s also practical is that you don’t have to worry about stains because you can easily clean them with a damp cloth.

If you enjoy a bit of DIY, you can also cover or line old baskets with matching fabric. That way, they even fit your own color scheme! 😄

It feels great to refresh your furniture like this!
