Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat unusual problem: In our hallway, there is an Ikea Kallax shelf that we use as a shoe rack. Unfortunately, the shelf keeps tipping slightly toward the entrance door. It’s not a huge issue, but it’s annoying, and I’m worried it might get damaged or eventually fall over.

The shelf stands on a relatively smooth laminate floor, and I suspect that the weight of the shoes combined with the uneven surface causes it to lean toward the entrance.

Does anyone have practical tips or experience on how to make the Kallax more stable so it no longer tips? Maybe there are special pads, anchors, or weight distribution tricks that could help. I’m grateful for any advice!

Hello,

if the Kallax shelf does not have a stable hold on the laminate flooring, I would first check for an even surface, for example by using non-slip felt pads or rubber feet under the legs.

Additionally, it can help to secure the shelf to the wall with wooden dowels or metal angle brackets to prevent tipping.

Another idea would be to place heavier items in the lower section of the shelf to lower the center of gravity.

Another point that is often overlooked in such cases is the leveling and preparation of the floor. Laminate flooring can have slight unevenness that may cause the shelf to tilt.

I recommend checking the shelf feet with a spirit level before placing it, and using small thick felt pads or wedges under uneven feet. Measurements should be taken carefully to ensure the shelf stands completely level.

Additionally, attaching the shelf to the wall can be useful, especially in areas with heavy foot traffic or where stability is important.

Place non-slip rubber pads underneath.
Secure the shelf to the wall with screws.
Store heavy items at the bottom.

Hello Noemibar48,

first, a few questions to better understand the issue: How many pairs of shoes do you store on the shelf, and how are they distributed across the compartments? Is the Kallax shelf placed directly against the wall or slightly away from it?

Since Kallax is made from thin particleboard, it is not very stable and tends to wobble if the load is unevenly distributed. Especially when heavy shoes are stored in the upper compartments, the center of gravity shifts upwards, which causes instability.

I would recommend the following steps to secure the Kallax against tipping:

1. Check the feet: Ikea does not supply Kallax with adjustable feet. Small unevenness in laminate flooring can affect its stability. Add adjustable furniture gliders or at least felt pads, but make sure they are all at the same height.

2. Redistribute the weight: Heavy shoes or other items should preferably be stored in the lowest compartments, while the upper ones should only hold light items.

3. Fix it to the wall: There are special brackets or safety sets for furniture. This is especially sensible in a passageway to prevent tipping.

4. Check the floor: Sometimes laminate floors are not perfectly level. A thin but firm anti-slip mat underneath the shelf can help improve stability.

If possible, please try this. I can research more detailed information about fixing options if needed.

Best regards

Two quick tips:

- Make sure there is no floor bump or door threshold caught at the bottom of the shelving unit.
- Non-slip pads made of silicone or laminate stoppers can work wonders.
