Hello everyone,

I have had a Kallax shelving unit from IKEA for about 5 years, which I have used very gently and sparingly, mainly for storing lightweight items. However, I have recently noticed that the unit is becoming increasingly unstable – it wobbles, the joints seem to be loosening, and the load-bearing capacity appears to be reduced. The use has been very moderate, with no overloading or impacts.

Now I am wondering whether this could be due to a material defect or a structural weakness in the shelving unit, or if aging and environmental factors (humidity, temperature) might be playing a role.

Has anyone had similar experiences or can assess the cause of such instability after years of light use? Are there known quality issues with Kallax that develop over time?

I look forward to your insights and tips on diagnosing the cause or possible repair options.

Hello Dradan,

First of all, an introduction: Kallax is generally a very popular shelving unit that stands out due to its modular design, but it is also made from cost-effective materials, which could explain some weaknesses in long-term durability.

1. Material: Kallax is mainly made of particleboard with a thin melamine coating. These boards can swell over time due to moisture or lose stability because of stress and temperature changes.

2. Joints: The shelving is held together with simple fittings and dowels. While these may not loosen from constant warping under light use, aging can still lead to material fatigue.

3. Load: Even light but continuous weight can cause deterioration in lower-quality components.

My recommendation: First, check if any screws or dowels have loosened. If so, tightening them might help. Otherwise, testing for moisture damage is advisable.

Conclusion: A material defect is possible, but it is often due to a combination of environmental factors and the inherent quality of particleboard.

I hope this gives you an initial overview.

That sounds really frustrating, especially since you didn’t even heavily use the shelving unit. I can completely understand how disappointing it is when furniture doesn’t hold up as expected.

Sometimes, with items like Kallax, I get the impression that although they look sturdy, they are designed for normal use and not necessarily for long-term durability over several years, especially when conditions change (humidity, minor damage over time).

Did you buy the shelving unit directly from IKEA or did you get it second-hand?

Either way, I hope there’s a simple solution — the last thing anyone wants is stress over a piece of furniture that should just work 🙂

Hello Dradan,

to return to the technical aspects: Your observation that the shelf becomes unstable despite little use indeed suggests possible material fatigue or environmental effects.

Particleboard tends to lose strength over time, especially when exposed to moisture, even if only minimally present. The melamine coating offers some protection but is not completely impermeable.

This point is important because the fasteners often provide critical support. Joints can swell due to high humidity, causing dowels or fittings to loosen.

Temperature fluctuations can also cause materials to expand and contract, which affects stability.

My tip: Try to place the shelf in a dry, preferably temperature-controlled area. If possible, check the joints and retighten them.

If the shelf constantly wobbles or is warped, replacement might be advisable, as the boards could be irreversibly weakened.

Material defects in Kallax are quite rare. Often, the issue lies with the joints or assembly errors.

Check all screws and dowels, and tighten them.

If that doesn’t help, make sure the shelf is level. Uneven floors can cause instability.

A few years ago, I also had a similar surprise with my Kallax shelf – although I used it regularly. At that time, I was advised to reinforce the joints with some wood glue. It worked great and restored stability to my previously wobbly shelf.

Maybe just start a small repair project! A little care for the piece – and the wobbling disappears 😉
