Hello everyone,
Over the past few weeks, I have noticed that certain shelves, which used to fit easily into my Billy bookcases, no longer fit or are very difficult to insert. The bookcases themselves look unchanged, and I haven’t modified the shelves. Could there have been a change in the design, material, or dimensions that I am unaware of? Or could it be due to specific versions of the shelves that are not compatible? I am mainly interested in understanding why this is happening and whether there are reliable solutions to make the shelves fit again. Your experiences and explanations would be very helpful!

Hello Anna46,
Another important point is that, over time, wood and particle boards can slightly expand or warp due to moisture or temperature changes. Especially with older shelves, the joint edges might no longer fit perfectly, even if the shelf looks the same objectively.
I recommend carefully checking the drill holes and supports before getting frustrated. Sometimes, a simple cleaning of the drill holes or replacing worn supports can be enough. If the shelf is placed in a damp area, the shelves themselves might also be slightly warped.
Stay patient—many people face these issues, and there are usually simple solutions.

Buy new shelf supports if needed that match your shelves.Fully agree, this is often the key. I would add: it’s best not to buy the cheapest supports but rather the original ones from Ikea. Copies may cause fitting issues.
