Hello everyone,
I have a Billy bookshelf from IKEA that quickly accumulates pet hair due to my two long-haired cats. A lot of hair gets stuck especially in the grooves and along the edges. I am looking for effective ways to thoroughly and gently remove this hair without damaging the wood or the surface.
Does anyone have tips for cleaning pet hair specifically? What tools (e.g., special brushes, cloths, sprays) have you used? And is it better to take the shelf apart for cleaning, or can it be done well while it’s still assembled?
I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Hello tauylvi,
I’m very familiar with the issue of pet hair on BILLY shelves. The hair tends to accumulate especially in corners and along edges, where regular dusting often doesn’t reach.
My first tip: use a rubber squeegee or rubber brush. The static charge helps to pick up hair particularly effectively. Additionally, you can use a damp microfiber cloth, as the slight moisture attracts hair well without damaging the wood.
When cleaning the shelf while it’s assembled, I strongly recommend removing all the shelves to easily access the inside surfaces. For deeper corners, a vacuum cleaner with a narrow crevice tool can be very effective.
Completely disassembling the unit is usually not necessary, unless there are really hard-to-reach spots.
Good luck with the cleaning!

I totally understand how you feel, tauylvi; dealing with pet hair on furniture can be really frustrating. It’s great that you’re thinking about cleaning thoroughly without damaging the surface.
Personally, I’ve had good results with a reusable lint roller, which picks up surprisingly large amounts of fur. However, you need to be careful not to rub too hard to protect the shelf.
Sometimes it also helps me to tilt the shelf slightly against the wall and use compressed air (for example, from a can of compressed air) to blow the hair out of the corners. This worked well for me, especially if I’ve already brushed the area beforehand.

Removing pet hair from wooden surfaces like the BILLY shelf requires careful selection of cleaning agents to prevent damage to the material.
Recommended methods include:
- A damp microfiber cloth without chemical additives
- Rubber brushes as a mechanical aid, since they loosen hair through static electricity
- A handheld vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool
Chemical sprays or harsh cleaning products should be avoided, as they can damage the surface.
Regarding disassembly: It is not usually necessary to take the shelf completely apart. Removing the shelves is often sufficient to access the relevant areas.

A brief addition from my experience:
A brush with soft synthetic bristles can help remove hair from narrow gaps that vacuum cleaners have difficulty reaching. After brushing, wipe down again with a microfiber cloth to eliminate any remaining dust.
Additionally, I recommend occasionally taking preventive measures, such as using washable covers for furniture to reduce hair accumulation.
