ᐅ Is it worthwhile to apply extra oil to Kallax shelves?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelf from IKEA and am now wondering if it actually makes sense to oil the shelves in addition. The shelves are basically lacquered or pretreated, but I’m curious whether additional oiling provides a noticeable benefit in terms of protection, durability, and appearance.

Are there any experiences or recommendations? Does oiling have an effect on resistance to moisture and scratches? And should one preferably use a special wood oil or another product?

I want to avoid spending unnecessary time and materials without really gaining any advantages. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Good question, mireo.

How can a layperson tell if their flooring is melamine-coated or made from genuine, untreated wood?

A simple test: If possible, examine the edges. Melamine boards have a very hard, smooth surface, often with a continuous pattern. If you see a thin plastic layer with slightly increased hardness at the edges, that’s an indication of melamine.

You can also try a small drop of water: if it beads up immediately, there is likely a coating. If it soaks in and darkens the wood, the surface is raw or at least untreated.

If you gently scratch a less visible corner of the surface with your fingernail and no splinters or finishes come off, it might be untreated wood.

Warning: Don’t scratch too hard to avoid causing damage.

Generally, Kallax is mostly made from coated boards, but there may be differences depending on the production year.

If the floor layers look like what you commonly see from IKEA (a light particleboard base with a thin decorative layer on top), then they are most likely melamine-coated.

A practical test is to gently rub a less visible area with very fine sandpaper. You can then feel if the surface layer comes off or if there is real wood underneath.

This often confirms that you don’t have a solid wood surface, but rather a coating that cannot be affected by oiling.

A clear and fact-based summary:

Kallax shelves are usually made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which serves as a protective and durable surface. Oiling such a surface is generally not effective because the oil does not penetrate the plastic coating and therefore does not provide additional protection.

For untreated, raw solid wood boards, on the other hand, oiling improves water resistance, slightly increases scratch resistance, and gives the surface a warmer appearance.

In conclusion: Oiling is worthwhile for Kallax boards only if the surface is untreated or just raw sanded; otherwise, it is mainly an aesthetic measure without significant protective benefits.

I personally leave my Kallax shelves as they are.

They are sturdy enough, and the maintenance effort for oiling is not worth the benefit. In addition, oil does not adhere properly to coated surfaces.

If you care about the appearance, that’s fine, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a protective measure.

Thank you all for the detailed answers and assessments.

In the end, it mainly seems to depend on how my shelves are actually constructed. Following your tips, I will try the water test and possibly gently check the edge.

If it is a coated surface, I will skip the oiling. However, if it turns out to be raw wood, I will apply a suitable wood oil to improve both protection and appearance.

I’m glad to have received different perspectives here; it really helps me with my decision!
