Hello everyone,

Over the past few weeks, I have noticed that certain shelves, which used to fit easily into my Billy bookcases, no longer fit or are very difficult to insert. The bookcases themselves look unchanged, and I haven’t modified the shelves. Could there have been a change in the design, material, or dimensions that I am unaware of? Or could it be due to specific versions of the shelves that are not compatible? I am mainly interested in understanding why this is happening and whether there are reliable solutions to make the shelves fit again. Your experiences and explanations would be very helpful!

You’re onto the Ikea phenomenon, which I often view critically myself: manufacturers tend to gradually change dimensions, design, or materials to save costs. Often, you only notice this when well-established parts suddenly no longer fit together. Maybe this is also the case with BILLY – firstly, to promote new versions, and secondly, to standardize inventory management.

In my opinion, this is a clever but frustrating tactic to encourage customers to repurchase. Repairs or upgrades of older furniture become more difficult as a result. It might be worth addressing this directly with Ikea – although I doubt you will get a clear answer.

BILLY shelves come with different types of shelves and tolerances. Older shelves sometimes do not fit because new shelves have slightly different drilling or fastening systems.

To fully understand the issue, we should take a closer look at the construction of the BILLY shelves. Basically, the shelf consists of the side panels with standard factory-drilled holes arranged in a consistent spacing pattern (usually 32 mm). These holes are designed to hold the shelf supports.

One possible reason why older or different shelves no longer fit is that newer shelves may have slightly altered hole patterns or use different types of supports. Additionally, the thickness of the shelves can vary—a small change from 2 cm to about 2.5 cm (0.8 inches to 1 inch) can already cause problems. The edge banding or cutouts on the sides may also differ in size.

The material used is another important factor. Newer shelves might have a different composition (MDF instead of particleboard) or be veneered, which can affect the fit and flexibility.

It would be helpful to know exactly which models you are comparing and whether these are special editions (e.g., BILLY with glass door or BILLY Oxberg). Does the shelf fit better in a unit from the same production year?

If you could provide measurements of the hole spacing and shelf thickness, that would be useful to better identify the cause.

Hello Anna46,

Here is a brief overview of why shelf boards might no longer fit or could cause difficulties, and what you can do about it:

1. Different drilling holes on the side panels. The holes for the shelf supports are often standardized but may have been changed in newer models or variants. Check the distance between the drill holes on your shelving unit against the brackets for the shelves.

2. Thickness and material of the shelf board. A thicker or stiffer board can be harder to fit, especially if the side panels are slightly narrower or wider.

3. Design of the supports. New shelving units might use different supports that are incompatible with older shelves.

4. Variations in manufacturing tolerances. Wood or particle boards can expand or shrink, which leads to fitting issues.

Suggested solution:
- First, measure the drill holes, thickness, and width of the shelf very precisely.
- Test if other shelves of the same type or production year are compatible.
- If necessary, purchase new shelf supports that match your shelves.
- For minor fitting problems, gently sanding the edges can help.

Also, keep in mind that some shelves might be intended for different furniture series. I hope this helps a bit!

I can confirm that. BILLY shelving units are continuously adjusted by Ikea due to pressure to optimize price and quality — both in terms of materials and dimensions.

In addition, the shelf supports have often been replaced. The metal supports commonly used before have sometimes been substituted with plastic versions that require a different way of holding the shelf.

If you are technically skilled, it’s worth taking precise measurements (distance between screw holes, width, depth) and comparing them with currently available replacement parts. This way, you can specifically obtain compatible shelves.
