Hello everyone,

I recently acquired the popular IKEA BILLY bookshelf made of solid birch and have realized that wood maintenance is not quite straightforward. My question is: What kind of wood care is recommended for the BILLY shelf to keep the surface in good condition over the long term without affecting the typical light appearance or the natural feel?

I am especially interested in tips on which care products (e.g., oils, waxes, varnishes), application frequency, and methods have proven effective. Also, what is the best way to handle minor signs of wear such as scratches and discoloration?

I would appreciate any experience-based advice or reliable recommendations.

For BILLY, I recommend a neutral furniture oil or wax that protects the surface without darkening it. Apply regularly every few months using a soft cloth. For scratches, light sanding and re-oiling helps.

The maintenance of BILLY, which is made of birch wood, should be adapted to the natural material. An oil-based care product containing linseed oil is especially suitable because it penetrates deeply into the wood and nourishes the fibers without leaving a plastic film.

Waxes can tend to form a film, which is not ideal if you want the shelf to look natural. It is important to clean and dust the surface before treatment to avoid scratches caused by dirt particles.

I can confirm that. Minor damage can be effectively repaired this way. Use very fine sandpaper and avoid sanding too much, as this can cause uneven surfaces.

An important point regarding wood maintenance for BILLY is to avoid moisture and direct sunlight to prevent warping and fading.

For maintenance, products containing natural resin without solvents are recommended, as they do not clog the wood’s pores and preserve its breathability.

It is also advised to carry out maintenance in spring and autumn to keep the wood well cared for throughout the year.

Regarding scratches: these can be subtly concealed with a color-matched wood repair marker if sanding is not an option.

I can fully agree with that. I would also add that any excess oil must be thoroughly removed after application, otherwise the surface will remain sticky. The drying time should be sufficiently observed, ideally at least 12 hours, to ensure proper curing.
