Hello everyone, I recently purchased a Billy bookcase from IKEA that is covered with a wood veneer. My specific question is: What kind of maintenance is needed for a BILLY bookcase with wood veneer to ensure the surface stays protected over time, does not get stained, and the wood does not peel or discolor? I would especially like to know which cleaning products are suitable, whether special oils or polishes should be used, and if there are any particular tips for regular care. Thank you in advance for your advice!

So, I think this kind of maintenance can actually be a bit enjoyable. I personally use a simple damp microfiber cloth for my Billy shelf and occasionally apply a polish specifically made for wood veneers. The important thing is not to use too much water. Here’s a little tip: if you warm the polish slightly (for example, in your hand), it spreads more easily and gives a more even finish.

And hey, just dust regularly—it really makes a difference in keeping that nice look. The shelf will shine beautifully and instantly lift your mood, right? 😉

This is a very practical tip that I also always recommend! Warming the polish improves its spreadability significantly, especially in cold winter temperatures.

As an addition: avoid applying too much polish at once; it’s better to work in several thin layers. This prevents unpleasant, sticky residues on the veneer.

It is also important to buff off afterwards with a clean, dry cloth. This achieves the best shine without smudges.

Thank you for the extensive and helpful tips so far; I’m learning a lot! I have a follow-up question: What about scratches or minor damage to the veneer? Is it possible to repair these yourself, and if so, how can it be done without the surface becoming blotchy or uneven?

What options are available if something does happen, and what should you pay attention to? I would greatly appreciate any advice and practical tips.

Yes, minor scratches can usually be treated quite well on your own. There are special repair kits for wood veneers available from specialist suppliers, which often include colored wax sticks or repair markers. These can be used to carefully fill in scratches with a matching color, then gently remove any excess material.

Another tip is to use furniture polish, which can slightly refresh rough or dull areas.

For more extensive damage, professional veneer repair is usually the better option, as the veneer is very thin.

In short: For small scratches, buy and use repair markers in matching colors. Do not use coarse abrasives.

Then apply furniture polish to minimize color differences. Have larger damages examined by a professional.

This way, the shelf will maintain its well-kept appearance.

Another important point regarding repairs: never use paint or other substances without checking first, as they may damage the veneer.

The surface on the BILLY shelf is thin, and the wood veneer can peel off if handled incorrectly. Always use products specifically recommended for veneered furniture.

Also important: after the repair, do not apply water or cleaning agents until the area is completely dry and fully cured.
