Hello everyone,

I have a Billy shelf with several scratches on the shelves made of particleboard. The scratches are not very deep but are still visible and bother me visually.

My question: How can scratches on Billy shelves be effectively repaired so that they become as invisible as possible and the surface appears quite smooth again? Which tools, materials, or home remedies are best suited for this, even though it’s not a professional solid wood surface?

I look forward to specific tips, preferably with step-by-step instructions and advice on any pre-treatment or aftercare for the repaired areas. Thanks in advance!

To add to the previous answers: Particleboard, like the type used for Billy bookshelf shelves, does not have a solid wood surface, so burn-in repair methods (as used for solid wood) are not applicable.

For scratches on painted surfaces, I still recommend using color-matched furniture markers and, if the scratch is more noticeable, lightly sanding with 400-grit sandpaper.

It is important to apply a suitable clear coat after color or wax touch-up to ensure lasting protection.

Additionally, I advise against using aggressive chemicals, as they can damage the surface.

I recommend wax kits specifically designed for laminate or chipboard, as they adapt well

Thank you for the detailed guide, teyosef! Could you also share which brands or products you would recommend for these wax kits? Are there affordable sets that often receive good reviews?

Additionally, I would like to know if applying furniture polish or hard oil on the repaired areas is advisable to improve durability.

Sure, I often use the "Guardsman Repair Kit" or the "Dr. Schutz Furniture Wax Set" – both are of good quality and reasonably priced. These kits usually include several shades so you can mix to match the color accurately.

For painted shelves, I would recommend furniture polish to maintain the shine and protect the surface. Hard oil can alter the surface, so I would avoid it especially on particleboard and coated surfaces.

A small tip: Remove fingerprints around the repaired area beforehand, otherwise the difference will be visible. Wipe with a damp cloth and let it dry thoroughly before repairing.

One final note: for Billy shelves with a melamine coating, solvent-based products should be avoided as they can quickly damage the surface.

Home remedies like walnut or olive oil can help visually mask minor scratches but are not a long-lasting solution.

Professional furniture repair wax kits or touch-up markers are therefore the best options to effectively conceal scratches over the long term.
