danjanHello everyone,
I am currently planning to install an IKEA Metod kitchen and want to carry out the work as efficiently and neatly as possible. Therefore, I am specifically interested in which tools you consider absolutely essential for assembling the Metod kitchen cabinets.
I would like to hear not only about the basic tools everyone usually mentions (screwdriver, cordless drill), but also any less obvious tools or aids that significantly simplify the assembly – whether when handling the carcasses, installing the hinges, or fitting the countertop.
With a focus on stability and precision, I want to avoid improvising and prevent mistakes. What experiences have you had? What should definitely not be missing when assembling an IKEA Metod kitchen professionally?
Thanks in advance for your detailed tips!

Hello danjan,
I like to discuss the topic of tools for IKEA Metod in detail and repeatedly because there are some common pitfalls that can be avoided with the right tools:
1. Cordless drill: Obviously essential. It’s important to also have the appropriate Torx and insert bits, as IKEA uses many special quick-assembly fittings. The torque should be adjustable to avoid overtightening screws and damaging the particleboard.
2. Spirit level: A classic tool to align all cabinet carcasses precisely. A digital spirit level can also be used for greater accuracy.
3. Carpenter’s square or angle connector: Right angles are crucial in Metod kitchens to join the units cleanly.
4. Rubber mallet: This allows you to gently but securely tap the countertop and plinths into place without causing damage.
5. Clamps: Often underestimated but extremely helpful for holding carcasses firmly together while screwing them.
6. File or sharp utility knife: For minor edge adjustments or perfectly fitting drill holes around the countertop area.
7. Drill with wood bits, and if needed, a special Forstner bit for installing hinges, electrical outlets, or damping elements.
I would be interested in a few more details: Are you planning a standard Metod kitchen or one with a lot of special accessories? Will the cabinets be installed in a new location or in an existing kitchen? This can affect the tool requirements.

3. Angle gauge or corner connector: In Metod kitchens, right angles are crucial for fitting the modules together cleanly. This is an important point that is often underestimated. However, it is not enough to only focus on right angles; the consistent alignment of the fronts is equally important. In this case, an angle gauge alone may not always suffice, which is why I would recommend using a straight edge as well to check the fronts.
Additionally, I would like to point out that a good cordless screwdriver should not only have adjustable torque settings but also sufficient battery capacity for longer assembly periods. If you have to recharge in the middle of the process, you quickly lose momentum, which can lead to inaccuracies.
I’m interested: What are your experiences with using clamps during hinge installation? Are there any proven techniques or alternatives?

The kitchen is mostly standard Metod, but with some pull-out cabinets and a built-in dishwasher. The kitchen will be completely newly installed in a freshly renovated apartment, so there won’t be any old cabinets or plumbing in the way.
The point about clamps caught my interest. I’ve often wondered how to secure the units so nothing shifts while screwing them together. Are there alternatives if I don’t have clamps? Or is careful positioning with two helpers usually enough?
