Good morning everyone, I am currently working on maintaining my IKEA Hemnes dressers and have come across the question of which replacement parts for these pieces of furniture are most commonly needed. I am especially interested in whether certain components like fittings, drawer slides (runner systems), or fronts need to be replaced more often than others, depending on the usage and age of the dresser. What experiences do you have in this regard? Do you have any suggestions on which spare parts are best to keep in stock to enable quick repairs when necessary? I am really looking forward to your practical insights and tips!

Usually, it is the drawer slides that wear out or jam the quickest. Sometimes, the back panel can break under heavy load. In general, I would always check the hinges and the small wooden dowels.

Hello Stella9, I can fully understand your question and would like to add a few details. The HEMNES series is solidly built, but as is common with wooden furniture, wear and tear most often appears on the drawer slides and metal fittings. Screws on drawer fronts or runners often loosen and need to be tightened. Replacement back panels are occasionally needed, especially if the dresser is moved or subjected to heavy loads. Damage to the actual fronts or cabinet panels is rare, except when exposed to direct moisture or strong impact.

Additional information: Studies show that many HEMNES dressers often require replacement of the drawer slides after several years, especially the plastic guide components. The metal hinges are also prone to deformation with heavy use, which can affect how well the drawers close. The back panel of the cabinet is relatively thin and can be easily damaged. Wooden dowels or alternative guide rail types are replaced less frequently, as these are often included in duplicate with the delivery.

Most often, it’s the drawer slides that wear out or get stuck first.

I can confirm that. With us, the wear on the drawer slides really tested our patience because even small design flaws would sometimes cause the drawers to jam. This limited their usability, which is especially frustrating for a family dresser. However, having a few spare parts on hand helps a lot, especially if you don’t want to make frequent trips to the nearest store.

Stella9, for maintenance it is advisable to keep an eye not only on the standard sets of screws but also on the hinge mechanisms and the drawer rollers. These components bear the main load and tend to wear out more quickly. In some cases, upgrading to higher-quality drawer systems can help reduce the need for replacement. If you need more detailed recommendations regarding part numbers or sources, I can put together some information for you.
