I am facing the challenge of needing a narrower storage system in my small apartment, as the available space for a wardrobe is very limited. My question to the community is: Which versions of the Ikea Pax wardrobe do you think are best suited for tight spaces? I am particularly interested in information about the narrower widths, the availability of different doors and interior fittings that work well for small bedrooms or hallways. It would also be helpful to learn how flexible these versions are when it comes to customization and if there are any practical tips to make the most of the available space without the wardrobe dominating the room.

Do you usually use the standard 201 cm (79 inches) or the 236 cm (93 inches) version for such purposes?I prefer the 236 cm (93 inches) version in tight spaces because the extra height significantly increases storage capacity without taking up more floor area. You just need to make sure the upper shelves or compartments remain accessible – a small step ladder can be helpful here.
Regarding stability: Ikea designed the taller versions to be wall-mounted, which is mandatory. The freestanding stability without attachment is limited. When setting it up, I recommend planning the internal divisions thoughtfully to avoid wasted space inside.
One more tip: The narrow Pax wardrobes with hinged doors only really work in small rooms if there is enough clearance space to open the doors fully. If not, sliding doors are definitely the better option.
Wow, great thread! 🙂 I have the 50cm (20 inch) wide Pax with sliding doors in my small bedroom and I’m really happy with it! The customizable interior helped me organize everything compactly yet clearly.
That’s absolutely right! For me, sliding doors are invaluable – I didn’t lose any space because of door clearance.
A quick tip: I also attached a few hooks to the inside of the doors, so I make the most of every corner. So go for it, it works great even with the narrow models and it’s really fun to maximize the space like this! 🙂

There are sliding doors available, which are especially suitable when there is limited space in front of the wardrobe.
