Hello everyone, I am currently planning to purchase an Ikea Pax wardrobe and I am particularly interested in the doors. My question is: Which Ikea Pax doors come with a built-in soft-close function? I have done some research, but the information is somewhat unclear, and not all door types seem to support this feature by default. It is especially important for me to know whether soft-close is integrated according to the original product design or if it can only be achieved through additional retrofitting. Perhaps some of you have experience with different models or know which versions come with soft-close as standard? Thanks for your help!
Interesting discussion. However, I would like to point out that even if a soft-close feature is offered for certain Pax doors, the technology behind it is sometimes not fully developed. IKEA is known for mass production at an affordable price, which often affects the material quality and durability of mechanical components. Does anyone have experience regarding how durable the soft-close system on the Pax sliding doors really is? Or whether retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on hinged doors requires adjustments or repairs after just a few months?
Regarding your question, @enrique7: From a technical perspective, the soft-close mechanism in the Pax sliding doors is a standardized damping system integrated into the guide rail. It uses hydraulic or gas-assisted dampers that slow down the door when closing. Mechanical stress is relatively low with normal use; however, regular cleaning of the rails and screw connections is recommended, as foreign objects can impair functionality.
For the hinged doors, the retrofit kit includes so-called clip-on dampers mounted on the hinges. To my knowledge, these are made of plastic with spring mechanics, which is technically sufficient but does not offer the same durability as high-quality hinges with soft-close from specialized manufacturers.
It would be helpful for Meopa47 to know whether you prefer sliding doors or classic hinged doors, as this already significantly limits the options regarding soft-close features.

Thanks in advance for all the helpful information! Basically, I’m leaning towards hinged doors because I find their look more classic. The tips about the retrofit option with the soft-close kit are very useful. I’m also considering everyday practicality: If I buy standard hinged doors without soft-close by default, could I then simply purchase the soft-close set from Ikea and install it myself? Or is the installation technically quite demanding and only compatible with certain doors? Also, are there doors that already come with this mechanism from the factory? Otherwise, I would definitely take a closer look at those for my shortlist.

IKEA officially offers the "PAX Soft Closing kit" as an accessory. Installation is relatively straightforward but requires some precision when attaching it to the hinges. It is important that your hinged doors have compatible hinges, which are usually the standard PAX hinges. You should check compatibility before purchasing.

Take a look, I used the swing doors with the retrofit kit and I thought the combination was great! 😉 Of course, they don’t feel 100% like the higher-end designer furniture, but for the price and functionality, it's totally fine. The closing is significantly softened, and the door no longer slams shut.

Another good thing: If you’re unsure during assembly, Ikea offers videos online or in their tips section that clearly show how to install the soft-close clips. Just follow the steps carefully and it works! 👍

Undersized dampers will only provide limited soft-close functionality, or the door may make rattling noises when closing. Soft-close kits for Ikea Pax are designed to fit the standard dimensions well. If you have doors with glass panels or special finishes, you should definitely check in advance whether the kit is compatible. Some surfaces are more sensitive to pressure and leverage effects from installation aids.
