Hello everyone, I am currently planning to purchase an Ikea Pax wardrobe and I am particularly interested in the doors. My question is: Which Ikea Pax doors come with a built-in soft-close function? I have done some research, but the information is somewhat unclear, and not all door types seem to support this feature by default. It is especially important for me to know whether soft-close is integrated according to the original product design or if it can only be achieved through additional retrofitting. Perhaps some of you have experience with different models or know which versions come with soft-close as standard? Thanks for your help!

Hey Meopa47! Great that you brought up this topic—I really like the Pax series! 😄 So, to be clear: the soft-close feature is not standard on all doors from Ikea. In my experience, it is mainly the high-quality sliding door models that come with soft-close built-in. For the regular hinged doors, Ikea offers a special "PAX Soft Closing Set" as an upgrade. Fun fact: the damping really improves the feel when closing and protects the door! So you can either go with the sliding doors if that suits you, or equip the hinged doors with the set. Good luck!

As a supplement: Not all Pax doors come factory-equipped with a soft-close feature. The Pax sliding doors are standardly fitted with soft-close dampers, ensuring quiet and secure closing. Conventional hinged doors, on the other hand, do not include this technology by default. However, a separate soft-close mechanism kit can be purchased and retrofitted for hinged doors. It is important to note that the retrofit is generally compatible with all classic Pax hinged door models, but compatibility should be checked before purchase based on door thicknesses and hinge types.

The soft-close feature is not standard on all doors at Ikea.

That’s correct, but I would add that whether soft-close is even technically possible depends on the actual door. For swinging doors, hinges with built-in dampers are required, which Ikea doesn’t install on all models. There is also the question of how reliable retrofit kits are over time and whether they affect the design. I would be cautious about assuming that retrofit solutions provide the same level of comfort as integrated soft-close systems.

Hello Meopa47, I’m happy to help! Basically, Ikea offers two versions of the Pax wardrobes with soft-close features:

- Sliding doors: These come with an integrated soft-close mechanism that ensures quiet and smooth closing.
- Hinged doors: These do not have a built-in soft-close mechanism, but you can easily buy a soft-closing kit and install it yourself.

The retrofit kit is quite user-friendly and includes dampers and fittings that attach to the door hinges. So, if you prefer traditional hinged doors, retrofitting is a good option. If you like, I can also provide a brief installation guide!

I would like to add the following: Not only hinged doors, but also certain sliding door designs differ in terms of the soft-close feature. The soft-close for sliding doors is usually integrated and works very reliably as long as the doors are installed correctly. However, there are also some versions without soft-close, which are more affordable. It is important to note that the soft-close function for sliding doors always depends on the guide system. With hinged doors, however, as Tevin already mentioned, you have a practical solution with the retrofit kit if there is no damping included from the factory.
