Hello everyone,

I am currently considering using an Ikea PAX wardrobe system but am unsure whether it can be easily combined with real wood cabinet doors. Specifically, I am not referring to the original PAX doors from Ikea, but rather custom-made wooden doors or doors from a hardware store that I would like to use.

My questions are:
- Are these types of doors compatible with the PAX carcasses’ mounting system?
- Is modification often necessary, for example with hinges or door frames?
- Are there any issues regarding stability and durability?

I want to be as certain as possible whether such a combination is feasible and practical without complicated adjustments or ending up unable to assemble it.

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Basically yes, but the hinges usually need to be adjusted or replaced separately. PAX has a specific hole pattern. Without modification, it generally does not fit.

I did it myself: wooden doors made by a carpenter, hinges from PAX, pre-drilled holes, then it works. However, you need precise measurements.

Hello Naelge,

since some people here have already mentioned the topic of wood combined with PAX, I would like to add that it is important to adjust the thickness of the wooden doors to the PAX system. The PAX hinge brackets are designed for a door thickness of about 19 mm (3/4 inch). If your wooden doors are thicker, you can compensate for this with spacers or install the hinges accordingly.

You should also be aware of the risk of wood warping, especially with solid doors. If the wood warps, the function of the doors could be affected. Therefore, sealing and the type of wood are important factors.

The advantage is that wooden doors usually offer much better and more individual design options than the standard Ikea doors. However, the effort required for the adjustment should not be underestimated.

If you like, I can give you some tips on how to safely install the hinges and what to consider when drilling.

Thanks, that’s a helpful tip. Do you have experience with a specific type of wood that works particularly well? I was thinking of a plywood panel with veneer, as it’s supposed to be more stable than solid wood.

About your hinges: Could you explain how to adjust them to fit the wood thickness? Are there special hinges I should buy, or is it enough to use spacers?

Regarding the combination of Ikea PAX frames with wooden doors:

- The PAX system uses a specific mounting method with concealed hinges, whose drill holes are spaced 32 mm (1.26 inches) apart vertically and follow a particular horizontal pattern.
- For custom-made doors, these drill holes must be extremely precise and follow this pattern exactly; otherwise, the hinge will not fit properly.
- If the hole pattern is not followed, it is possible to use different hinges, but this requires advanced carpentry skills and electronic adjustments to the cabinet carcass.
- Stability is ensured as long as the wooden doors are not too heavy or thick. The PAX system has a weight limit of about 15 kg (33 lbs) per door.
- Plywood is generally more stable than solid wood, warps less, and is thus suitable for this purpose.

My advice: If you do not have a CNC machine or a drilling jig for the 32 mm (1.26 inches) system, it is better to have the doors made by a carpenter with the appropriate drill holes.
