Hello everyone,

I am planning to build Ikea Pax wardrobes myself and want to prepare as thoroughly as possible to avoid mistakes or unpleasant surprises. My specific question is: What should I definitely keep in mind when assembling Ikea Pax wardrobes, especially regarding material choices, stability, accessory compatibility, and installation? Are there common pitfalls to watch out for, and what is the best approach if I want to customize the dimensions?

I look forward to your helpful tips and experiences!

Could you or someone else explain exactly which fasteners Ikea uses and whether there are recommended alternatives?

Sure! Ikea Pax primarily uses so-called dowels combined with cam locks (cylindrical connectors that lock the dowels together by twisting). These fasteners are quite specific, but they can be replaced with standard wood connectors available on the market.

Alternatives include:
- Dowel pins or spring dowels, which provide good stability
- Furniture connectors (cam locks) from hardware stores
- Screws and angle brackets if high loads are expected

It is important that all connections fit precisely without gaps. When choosing your own screws and dowels, make sure to select the correct size and quality of materials to ensure load-bearing capacity. Cheap screws may fail under load, so it is better to use branded hardware.

Hello Wulfila,

I’m adding a simple checkpoint to the response: Before you start, use the Ikea Pax assembly manual as a reference – the diagrams clearly show how the parts are connected. If you want to recreate the system yourself, you should get a few pieces of the original material to accurately compare fits and drill holes.

Typically:
- Cam locks connect carcass parts and prevent lateral shifting
- Dowels provide additional stability and precise alignment

Mistakes often happen when the wood isn’t pre-drilled accurately, or the drill holes are misaligned. Therefore, use precise stops or templates when drilling.

Summary:
- Know the original connection system, either replicate it or choose suitable alternatives
- Cut precisely and drill carefully
- Secure the back panel firmly

Good luck!

Regarding material selection: plywood panels at least 18-19 mm (0.7-0.75 inches) thick are recommended because they provide high stability and are easy to work with. Particle boards are cheaper but significantly less durable and more sensitive to moisture.

For stability: installing the back panel is not optional but essential; it prevents lateral twisting. Also, use sufficiently strong fasteners and brackets for reinforcement, especially with tall units.

Accessory compatibility: when choosing doors and drawers, make sure the hinges and slides are compatible with the material and frame used. There are various versions of Pax accessories that are not all compatible with each other.

Assembly: use a spirit level and align each section with millimeter precision. Misalignments can cause problems with doors and drawers later on, which is especially critical for self-built units.

Important: securing the wardrobe to the wall increases safety and prevents tipping.

Always use a back panel with a minimum thickness of 6 mm (0.24 inches); this increases stability and prevents warping. If you plan to install doors, check the hinge types for compatibility beforehand. Installation aids such as brackets or reinforcements can help keep the frame stable.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I’m also interested in whether you think it makes sense to use the IKEA-specific rail systems for drawers in self-built projects, or if there are better alternatives.

I’ve heard from some that compatible Blum rail systems are more durable. Are these easy to integrate into a self-built Pax wardrobe without major effort?
