Hello everyone,

I am planning to customize our IKEA Hemnes bed to make it both more functional and visually appealing. I have a question: Which DIY methods work best for the Hemnes bed series, especially when considering modifications like integrating bedside tables, painting, or adding extra storage solutions?

Does anyone have experience with material compatibility when painting or sanding, particularly because Hemnes is made of solid pine, which might be sensitive? I am also interested in the best ways to attach additional elements to the frame without compromising stability or damaging the original connectors.

I look forward to specific tips and user experiences that show what is truly practical—also recommendations for tools and techniques that have proven reliable.

Thank you in advance!

Hello Janmanuela,

Your project sounds exciting, and I can offer some detailed advice from experience that I hope will be helpful.

First, regarding the painting: Hemnes is actually made from solid pine, which makes it sensitive to moisture and temperature changes. Before sanding, I recommend starting with 120-grit sandpaper and then moving to 220-grit for a finer finish. When painting, applying a primer with wood protection is advisable to ensure better adhesion and prevent the paint from peeling.

For the choice of paint, solvent-based acrylic paints are best, as they offer good durability and a clean finish. Water-based paints may be more environmentally friendly but tend to be less resistant on pine wood.

Regarding additional elements: If you want to attach shelves or nightstands directly to the bed frame, I suggest not drilling directly into the frame wood parts without considering load distribution first. Although Hemnes beds are sturdy, the screws are designed for specific loads. It's best to attach accessories to the slatted frame or substructure.

Alternatively, you can use plug-in systems or clamp connections that don’t cause permanent holes. For example, an angle bracket with screws combined with wall plugs works well if you carefully distribute the load.

Finally, one tip: Make sure any additions are reversible, in case you want to restore the furniture to its original use later or maintain its value.

If you have specific measurements or photos of the planned modifications, we can discuss the methods in more detail. How large do you want the nightstands or storage spaces to be?

I hope this helps you as a first guideline.

For painting, I recommend sanding the bed thoroughly first and then applying multiple coats of lacquer.

For additional shelves or nightstands, screw into the slatted bed base or use angle brackets that are not attached to the main frame.

This way, stability is maintained.

Hello Janmanuela,

I can only confirm the previous advice and would like to add that for DIY projects involving Hemnes beds, proper preparation is essential. This means:

- Carefully remove all old paint or surface treatments using an appropriate wood sander.
- Take your time with intermediate sanding to ensure the new paint or varnish adheres well and doesn’t form bubbles.

Regarding stability: It is very important not to drill randomly. The screws in IKEA furniture are often reinforced with metal brackets, which should not be damaged to maintain structural stability.

If you want to attach new components, plan the load correctly and distribute it over several smaller screws or use wood glue in addition for better hold.

Storage space can be effectively created with pull-out boxes placed under the slatted frame. This way, you don’t have to alter the frame and can remain flexible.

I wish you the best of luck with your renovation, and feel free to ask if you have any questions!
