futikinHello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Hemnes furniture piece and am thinking about how to sustainably enhance it. Are there any upcycling ideas specifically for the Ikea Hemnes series that work well for different rooms and purposes? I’m looking for creative but also practical suggestions that can be done with minimal effort and either improve the original design or at least give it an interesting twist. I look forward to your ideas!

For example, the carcasses can be sanded with sandpaper and then coated with a high-quality, water-based matte paint. If you want to customize the furniture more extensively, it is advisable to apply decoupage techniques or veneered wood panels to the fronts. It is essential to measure the dimensions precisely before creating new parts because the original HEMNES components are often only partially standardized. Replacing the handles with models made of brass or copper can also give the piece a more refined appearance. For rooms with high humidity, it is also recommended to seal the surface afterward with a suitable clear lacquer to protect the paint finish.
If anyone is interested, you can bring the HEMNES shelves into the room and turn them into a small library. Adding a bit of paint or maybe some stamps can quickly make it a real eye-catcher. My friend even transformed a HEMNES glass-door cabinet into a stylish mini bar – a clever idea for the next party!

I once painted a HEMNES dresser with chalkboard paint, which makes it really versatile. This is a very good idea and adds great functionality. I would add that the surface should definitely be lightly sanded during preparation to ensure better adhesion of the chalkboard paint. Also, it is recommended to use special chalk to avoid damaging the chalkboard surface.
Additionally, instead of chalkboard paint, individual drawers can be painted with magnetic paint, allowing magnets and small notes to stick to them. This increases the multifunctionality of the HEMNES units.
