Hello everyone,

I would like to start a discussion on the following question: Which care products are especially suitable for IKEA BILLY shelves?

My concern is to find out which cleaning and maintenance products effectively protect and preserve the shelf surfaces without causing any damage. It is important to me that the products neither dissolve the surface nor scratch it or leave unattractive residues.

I am also interested to know whether home remedies are sufficient or if it is necessary to use specialized furniture care products. Perhaps someone has experience with natural care products or a specific IKEA product that has proven to work well.

I look forward to your opinions and tips!

Hello JUKAR,

a great question that every IKEA Billy owner should actually ask 😉. I personally prefer using a mild dish soap foam applied with a soft cloth—no harsh chemicals. Afterwards, wipe it down with a dry, soft cloth.

That’s exactly why I avoid aggressive cleaners. If you want more shine, you can also use a small amount of wood or furniture oil sparingly; it also helps protect against brittle edges. But be careful: Billy shelves are often made of melamine-coated particleboard. In this case, caution is advised, as too much oil can cause stains.

Try that and feel free to share your results. Maybe there are more tips from the community as well 🙂

Hello everyone,

I’d like to share a brief overview of the best care practices for BILLY shelves and recommend suitable cleaning products that won’t damage the surface:

1. Cleaning: Use a mild detergent, such as a gentle dish soap diluted in lukewarm water. Wipe the surface with a microfiber cloth to achieve a streak-free finish.

2. Avoid: Abrasive cleaners, alcohol-based products, and harsh solvents, as they can damage the plastic coating (melamine resin).

3. For protection: Occasionally apply a special furniture wax designed for coated surfaces, but use it sparingly—not on a regular basis.

4. Home remedies: A vinegar-water mixture is not recommended because vinegar can harm the melamine coating.

5. For stubborn stains: Use a mild soapy solution and a soft sponge without scrubbing.

Summary:
Clean with mild products and soft cloths, and only use furniture care products specifically intended for plastic-coated surfaces, and then only sparingly.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

To add to the previous speaker’s points, here are some precise facts:

BILLY shelves are mostly made of particleboard with a melamine resin surface. This makes the surface durable, but not resistant to all cleaning products.

- Use only pH-neutral cleaning agents.

- Avoid acetone, gasoline, turpentine, or similar solvents entirely.

- Water is sufficient for cleaning when combined with a non-abrasive cloth, such as a microfiber cloth.

Correct – this is the core issue: care oils or waxes can cause staining through the plastic layer in some cases if they are not suitable for melamine surfaces.

I also recommend not using homemade remedies with aggressive ingredients, as they can irreversibly damage the protective film of the surface.

For special cases, IKEA itself offers cleaning products that have been tested on the shelves. These are the safest options, though they are somewhat more expensive.

In short: gentle cleaning plus minimal protection is the best approach.
