Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought the Billy shelf unit from IKEA, which has a painted finish. Now I’m wondering which products are really recommended for maintaining this kind of paint. Specifically, I want to know how to protect the surface long-term and keep its nice shine without damaging the paint or leaving unsightly streaks.
I have heard about wax, special furniture polishes, and mild cleaners, but I’m unsure which products are actually suitable and what I should avoid. I’m also curious whether home remedies can be a valid alternative or if I absolutely need to use a specialized paint care product.
Do you have any experience caring for BILLY shelves or painted furniture in general? Are there particular brands you would recommend? Any advice that helps preserve the surface with minimal effort and risk is welcome.
Thank you in advance!

Basically, caution is advised with painted surfaces like those on the BILLY shelf unit. It is important not to use aggressive cleaning agents that could damage the paint.
I recommend the following procedure: First, remove dust with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For maintenance, special furniture polishes based on wax or care creams designed for painted furniture are suitable. These create a protective layer and help preserve the shine.
Home remedies such as olive oil or alcohol should be avoided, as they may cause streaks or dissolve the paint. Care products from brands like "Pronto," specifically formulated for painted surfaces, have been well tested and are suitable for everyday use.

For maintenance, special wax-based furniture polishes or care creams for lacquered furniture are suitable.Exactly, good tip! 🙂 I’ve been using "Pledge" furniture polish for years, which conditions really well without leaving a greasy residue, and the shelf looks nice and fresh. Just put a little on a cloth, then gently apply a thin layer. With BILLY, you can really notice how the finish comes back to life!
You can simply clean the shelf beforehand with a damp microfiber cloth, and you’re done. No magic involved, and a nice glossy surface definitely makes a difference in the living room 😉 Tip: Never spray directly onto the shelf, always apply to the cloth first!
I would like to add to the points made by Penau and suru61: It is true that furniture polishes can be helpful, but you should also carefully check the ingredients. Some polishes contain silicones that may look good initially but can damage the surface over time.
Therefore, Pledge should be used occasionally rather than as a permanent solution. I have also often read that the protective effect of cheaper polishes is limited. Alternatively, a neutral furniture wax that only nourishes without leaving chemical residues would be a more sustainable option.
Can anyone share concrete experience with wax pastes on lacquered BILLY shelves?

A brief overview of my experience and a simple step-by-step guide for lacquer care on BILLY shelves:
1. Remove dust: Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
2. Cleaning: If necessary, use a slightly damp cloth without any cleaning agents; avoid harsh chemicals!
3. Maintenance: I recommend furniture wax (preferably colorless) for wood or lacquer surfaces. It is important to apply the wax thinly and polish it well.
4. Frequency: Applying it 2-3 times a year is usually sufficient.
Common mistakes I notice are leaving too much product on the shelf or spraying it directly onto the surface, which leads to streaks or rough textures.
Personally, I use beeswax paste (for example, from manufacturers of abrasive creams under different names) with good results.

I bought a neutral furniture wax specifically designed for painted surfaces. The advantage is that it doesn’t settle into the pores but still provides deep care.
When applying, it’s important to spread the wax thinly, let it sit for a few minutes, and then polish intensively with a soft cloth. The result is a smooth, silky-looking surface that also protects against minor scratches.
To avoid misunderstandings: such waxes are not traditional polishing agents but care products that preserve and enhance the shelf finish.
