Hello everyone, I’m currently considering which color of IKEA Billy bookshelves is the easiest to maintain in daily use. My main concern is minimizing cleaning effort and having good resistance to typical dirt such as fingerprints, dust, or occasional stains. I’m particularly interested in experiences with different finishes, such as white, birch, dark brown, or the smooth high-gloss options. Are there specific colors or surfaces that have proven to be noticeably more durable in everyday use? And if so, what do you think is the reason for that? Thanks in advance for all helpful responses!
The basic materials of the BILLY shelves are usually melamine resin-coated particleboard. Matte white tends to be the least prone to dust and fingerprints because matte surfaces reflect less. High-gloss finishes in white or black, on the other hand, show fingerprints and scratches quickly, so they require more maintenance. Dark brown appears to attract dust, which is more noticeable. Birch finishes hide minor dirt well but are somewhat more sensitive to water marks if they are lacquered. So, if ease of maintenance is the main priority, I would recommend matte white options.

High-gloss finishes show fingerprints and scratches quickly That is generally true, but I wonder whether the coating of high-gloss models is actually less durable or if the visibility of fingerprints just appears subjectively worse. There are also special cleaning agents and care products – what has been your experience with these? Are high-gloss paints really impractical, or do they just require the right maintenance?I have a BILLY shelving unit in glossy white myself and can say that maintenance is quite easy if you regularly wipe it down with a microfiber cloth. Special furniture care products are not necessary. However, you do need to clean it more often because dust and fingerprints show up more quickly than on matte surfaces. With white matte shelves, dirt is actually less noticeable, but I find they tend to look dull faster if they are not cleaned properly.
