Hello everyone,

I recently bought several white KALLAX shelves from IKEA and am now wondering which cleaning and care products are best to keep the surfaces clean and intact over time. The white surfaces are usually made of melamine-coated wood-based panels, and I definitely want to avoid yellowing, dullness, or scratches.

Does anyone have experience with specific cleaners or care products that have worked particularly well? Is it better to use specialized furniture care products, or is a mild all-purpose cleaner sufficient? Are there any products to definitely avoid because they might damage the surface?

I would appreciate tips, good recommendations, or references to care instructions from IKEA or other sources. Thanks in advance!

Hello Richardla,

“The white surfaces are usually made of melamine-coated wood panels” – and that actually makes cleaning quite simple! 🙂

For my white KALLAX, I usually just use a damp microfiber cloth with some mild soapy water, which works great and leaves no streaks. Very important: Don’t use abrasive cleaners or rough sponges, because melamine surfaces can quickly become dull or scratched!

Also, there are special furniture care sprays for melamine-coated surfaces that nourish and protect them – which is great if you want an extra way to shield the surface from impacts and dirt. But honestly, for me, simple cleaning with water and mild dish soap is usually enough!

Give it a try, it really works well! 🙂

Hello everyone,

to address Richard’s question in detail, I would like to explain some basic points relevant for caring for white KALLAX surfaces:

1. Material characteristics: As correctly mentioned, the surfaces are usually made of melamine-coated particleboard. This coating is durable and relatively resistant to moisture, but aggressive cleaning agents can damage the surface.

2. Cleaning: It is recommended to use mild cleaning agents without harsh solvents or strong chemicals. A soft, damp microfiber cloth with a mild soap solution (e.g., a few drops of dishwashing liquid in water) is ideal. Stubborn stains can be treated with a gentle cleaner based on isopropanol, but be cautious with alcohol concentrations.

3. Avoiding scratches: Sharp or abrasive sponges and cleaning tools are not suitable. Excessive pressure should also be avoided.

4. Long-term care: Furniture care products designed for melamine-coated surfaces are available; they lightly polish the surface and offer some protection against dust and dirt. However, they are not strictly necessary and should be used sparingly.

Summary: For everyday cleaning, a damp cloth with mild dish soap is sufficient. For special care or protection, appropriate furniture care products suitable for melamine can be used. Products with aggressive chemicals, bleach, or abrasive additives should definitely be avoided.

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

I would like to support and expand on this a bit more technically.

The KALLAX shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which is highly resistant to moisture and many chemicals. However, there are limits:

- Heat: The surface should not be exposed to strong heat (e.g., placing hot objects directly on it), as heat can discolor or soften the coating.

- Scratch risk: Like other plastics, melamine can be damaged by mechanical stress. Therefore, abrasive pads or harsh cleaning agents are not recommended.

- Cleaning agents: Ideally, use pH-neutral or mildly alkaline cleaners. Be cautious with alcohol-based products: in low concentration, they work well against grease, but in higher concentrations, they can dull the surface.

- Stain removal: For grease or oil stains, a mild solvent such as isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) can help. It’s best to test inconspicuously first.

- Aftercare: For everyday use, cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient. To provide light protection against dust or fingerprints, you can use furniture polish formulated for plastic surfaces that contains no wax, to avoid residue buildup.

It would also be helpful to know if Richard has specific requirements, e.g., whether the shelves are subjected to heavy use or installed in a kitchen. This significantly affects maintenance.

If you like, please share a bit more about your intended use!
