Hello everyone, I’m currently considering which balcony box would best fit into a KALLAX shelf compartment. The compartment measures 33x33 cm (13x13 inches), and I’m looking for something weather-resistant since the box will be placed outside on my balcony. It’s important to me that the box is not only sturdy but also water-repellent because it will hold sunflowers and herbs, which need to be watered thoroughly from time to time. Does anyone have experience with suitable containers or advice on what to look for when choosing one? Thanks in advance for your help!
For your situation, I would recommend choosing a balcony planter box made specifically from polypropylene or polyethylene, as these plastics are UV-resistant and frost-proof. This prevents the box from aging or becoming brittle due to sun and rain exposure. The bottom should also have a drainage hole to avoid waterlogging. Regarding the dimensions: 30 cm (12 inches) width often fits better than 33 cm (13 inches), as the boxes might otherwise be too tight. Make sure the height of the box also fits your KALLAX shelf, especially if you plan to place the flowerpot inside.

To help you better, it would be useful to know if you want to place the balcony box directly into the compartment or hang it? Thanks for the clarification! I want to place the balcony box directly into the compartment, not hang it. The compartment is open, so the box will sit on the bottom of the shelf, which is outdoors. The shelf is made of wood but treated to be weather-resistant. A modern, simple design is important to me since the shelf is painted plain black. The box shouldn’t be too deep, otherwise there might not be enough soil inside.
Your requirements are clear and reasonable, Gilira. I can understand that you’re looking for something that not only fits but is also durable. I had similar needs and then chose a fiberglass balcony box. The material is sturdy, has a modern appearance, and is low maintenance. Maybe that could be something for you too 🙂

Decided on a fiberglass balcony planter box. The material is durable, has a modern look, and is low maintenance. I can only agree, if you want something a bit more premium. However, you need to measure precisely because fiberglass boxes are often slightly larger. Some manufacturers specifically offer balcony planter boxes that are built narrower.nubar schrieb:

If I use a 30 cm (12 inches) wide box, will there still be enough soil in it? What about the depth to ensure herbs can grow well? Can anyone recommend a specific model? I assume it’s hard to find exact 33 x 33 cm (13 x 13 inches) dimensions.

Can anyone recommend a specific model? Yes! I had excellent experience with the "Elho Corsica" balcony planters. They come in 30cm (12 inches) width and are made of weather-resistant plastic! Very stylish, very durable, and feature a practical water level indicator. A really great choice if you don’t want to spend much time on assembly. Highly recommend!!! 🙂
