Hello everyone, I’m currently considering which balcony box would best fit into a KALLAX shelf compartment. The compartment measures 33x33 cm (13x13 inches), and I’m looking for something weather-resistant since the box will be placed outside on my balcony. It’s important to me that the box is not only sturdy but also water-repellent because it will hold sunflowers and herbs, which need to be watered thoroughly from time to time. Does anyone have experience with suitable containers or advice on what to look for when choosing one? Thanks in advance for your help!

Is there enough soil to fit herbs?

That’s a very important question. Herbs require a certain amount of soil volume, with a minimum depth of about 20 cm (8 inches) recommended. Some balcony planters may be narrow but are taller instead. Pay attention to the height and volume specifications of the model. For a planter that is 33 cm (13 inches) wide and deep, there should be at least 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in height to ensure healthy growth. An alternative is slimmer but taller plant boxes if the width is limited.

Choose a box with a water drain. A width of 30cm (12 inches) often fits, but be careful: the internal dimensions are smaller. Important: height at least 15cm (6 inches).

Here’s a summary: Plastic containers are weather-resistant and the most practical, especially those from brands like Elho. Fiberglass is more elegant but somewhat larger and more expensive. The dimensions should not exceed 30 cm (12 inches) in width to fit into a KALLAX shelf compartment. The height should be at least 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) to provide good growing conditions for herbs. Drainage holes are essential to prevent waterlogging. What about the appearance? Do you have any tips for making the container even more weatherproof or visually suitable for outdoor use?

If you want a bit more protection, you can seal the boxes with a clear, weather-resistant varnish designed for plastics. I have also had good experiences with UV spray – this helps the paint last longer and prevents the box from fading too quickly. For the finishing touch, small stone or wood decorative elements work well, which you can attach using weatherproof adhesive.

Regarding appearance: A simple and elegant solution is to choose the box in a matte color that matches the KALLAX shelf, such as anthracite or black. This creates a uniform look. Most manufacturers offer different color shades. For additional protection, I recommend applying a special impregnation for plastic before use, which repels water and dirt.

I totally understand your concerns about weather resistance and aesthetics. Especially with a piece of furniture like the KALLAX, which is meant to look stylish, it makes sense that everything matches well. 🙂 Perhaps fabric covers or slipcovers could be an option that you put on when needed? They should be breathable to prevent any mold.
