Hello everyone, I’m currently considering which balcony box would best fit into a KALLAX shelf compartment. The compartment measures 33x33 cm (13x13 inches), and I’m looking for something weather-resistant since the box will be placed outside on my balcony. It’s important to me that the box is not only sturdy but also water-repellent because it will hold sunflowers and herbs, which need to be watered thoroughly from time to time. Does anyone have experience with suitable containers or advice on what to look for when choosing one? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey, what a great idea! 🙂 For the 33x33 compartment, I would definitely recommend plastic balcony boxes! They are usually weather-resistant, lightweight, and sturdy, and many models have holes or drainage systems that promote root growth. Check out well-known garden centers or online stores; there are often special boxes designed specifically for balcony railings. Good luck with your planting!

I think your question is very well thought out, Gilira. 🙂 I had a similar experience with my balcony and learned that it’s important not only to focus on the measurements but also on the material. For example, polypropylene or other weather-resistant plastics last a long time, don’t rust like metal, and are lighter than terracotta. I imagine that the combination of durability and weather resistance is your main criterion.

Please note the measurement: KALLAX compartment 33x33 cm (13x13 inches). Balcony planters often come in widths of 30-35 cm (12-14 inches), which usually fit. Material: Plastic is weather-resistant. Wood and metal require treatment.

I have plastic containers with drainage outlets, perfectly sized for 33 cm (13 inches). They work great because nothing rots and everything stays stable.

Hello Gilira, to assist you better, it would be helpful to know whether you want to place the balcony box directly into the frame or if it should be hung. This has a significant impact on the choice. It is also important to know if you have a preference for a particular design, such as modern or more rustic. Generally, balcony boxes made of plastic or fiberglass are the most weather-resistant because they are UV-resistant and waterproof. Wood looks more natural but needs to be treated. Metal rusts quickly without a protective coating.
