Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit with doors. Unfortunately, I have now noticed that the paint is chipping off along the edges of some of the doors. It seems like the surface is not very durable.

My question is: Should I file a complaint and insist on a replacement, or would it make more sense to touch up and repair the chipped areas myself?

I would like to hear about your experiences with situations like this. Is the customer service accommodating? How long does such a complaint usually take? And how well does a self-repair actually hold up?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Claiming a complaint when the paint peels off is the right approach. IKEA should provide a replacement without any problems. Repairing it yourself is usually not worth it, as the surface will become uneven.

I would return or exchange the shelf. The quality of KALLAX is generally supposed to be good, so paint peeling is definitely a defect.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Does anyone have experience with the process at IKEA regarding complaints? Do I need to return the entire shelving unit, or is it enough to have only the doors replaced? Are there differences depending on the store location?

I’m curious to know how complicated it really is.

Interesting how everyone immediately thinks of making a complaint here. Maybe the paint chipping on KALLAX is simply a design feature? 😉

Jokes aside: Making a complaint is fair and legal, but IKEA manufactures on a large scale. In the end, the furniture is not a museum piece. If you are too picky, you can return it. Everyone else can fix it themselves with some paint.

A complaint is always possible.

But a small repair is often faster to complete.

Sanding, a light touch-up paint, done.
