Hello everyone, I have a problem with one of the doors on my BILLY shelf not closing properly. The door still seems to be hanging mostly on the hinge side, but when I close it, it either leaves a small gap or only closes with significantly increased force, which is very inconvenient for daily use.

I have already tried realigning the door and adjusting the hinge a bit, but so far it hasn’t provided a satisfactory solution.

Are there any proven tricks or common causes when a BILLY door doesn’t close properly? What should I pay attention to, which screws are critical, or how exactly can the door be aligned optimally?

I look forward to tips and experiences from you.

Hi Franca, that sounds like the door might be slightly warped or the hinges may be a bit misaligned. Sometimes adjusting by just a tiny millimeter makes the door close smoothly again 🙂

My advice: try gently adjusting the top and bottom hinges if possible. BILLY usually has small screws on the hinges that allow you to fine-tune the horizontal and vertical positions.

If the door is warped, lightly readjusting the screws on the frame of the unit can also help. It requires some patience and a delicate touch, but you’ll definitely manage!

A bit like a watchmaker, but with fewer tiny parts ;-) Good luck!

A common issue with BILLY doors not closing properly is incorrect hinge adjustment. BILLY shelves usually use so-called 3D-adjustable hinges, allowing the door to be aligned in three directions: vertically, horizontally, and in depth.

1. Check that the hinges are securely fastened and that no screws are loose.
2. First, adjust the vertical alignment by slightly loosening the screws at the hinge base and repositioning the door.
3. Next, correct the horizontal alignment to ensure the door fits properly within the frame.
4. The depth adjustment can help if the door rubs against the frame or if the gap is uneven.

If the door still does not close properly after adjusting, the hinge itself may be damaged or worn. In this case, the hinges should be replaced.

Finally, the rubber buffers on the inside of the doors can also affect closing and should be checked.

A detailed guide in case the BILLY door no longer closes properly:

1. Check the door frame and hinges: Loose screws often feel slightly loose, especially if the shelf has been moved frequently.

2. Adjust the hinges: BILLY hinges can be adjusted in three directions:
- Vertical: Loosen the screw, move the door up or down, then tighten the screw again.
- Horizontal: The screw on the hinge allows side-to-side movement.
- Depth: The screw on the hinge arm adjusts the door closer to or further away from the body.

3. Check if the door is warped: A bent door rarely closes properly. Test if it lies flush against the frame.

4. Inspect or add rubber bumpers: These often become compressed over time and prevent proper closing.

5. Last resort: Replace the hinge if the mechanism is stiff or damaged.

Summary:
Most problems can be solved by precisely adjusting the three screws on the hinge. Important: test after each adjustment and make small changes, as this saves a lot of time.

Exactly. Both hinges on the door should be checked and adjusted.

A loose hinge is often the cause.

The door may also have warped.

Thanks for the helpful information so far – the 3D adjustment of the hinges sounds exactly like my approach.

Does anyone know if there are differences between the hinge models for BILLY? I have the standard version with the concealed hinge, no soft-close or anything like that.

Can I adjust these regular hinges with a standard Phillips screwdriver, or do I need special tools?

Also, I’m wondering how much play is actually possible in the hinges. At one point, I feel like the screws on the door are tight, but the bracket on the shelf itself has some movement. It’s really hard to tell.

I don’t want to adjust too much and make it worse.
