Hello everyone, I have a question that I hope the community is happy to discuss: What are your tips for the long-term care of IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet fronts, especially regarding maintaining material quality, surface, and color? I am interested in the best methods for cleaning the fronts, which cleaning products are suitable, what should be avoided, and if there are any recommended practices to prevent yellowing or scratches. Since Metod fronts are often promoted as durable compared to other kitchen fronts, I still want to make sure I treat them in the best possible way so they look like new even after several years. I’m also curious if there are experience-based tips that go beyond the manufacturer’s instructions.

I wonder if the usual manufacturer recommendations for cleaning Metod fronts are truly sufficient when it comes to long-term maintenance?

That’s a valid point. Generally, IKEA recommends using soap-based cleaning agents for Metod fronts and only brief contact with water to avoid damage.

It is a fact that exposure to sunlight can cause color changes due to UV radiation. If this happens, consistent protection with curtains or blinds is the only effective solution.

Additionally, material aging from mechanical stress can be minimized by:
- not placing sharp objects directly on the front
- immediately treating scratches and dents with repair kits
- regular, gentle cleaning and avoiding harsh chemicals

For lasting protection, special furniture care products without silicones are recommended to prevent clogging the surface. Thermal stress from extreme heat should also be strictly avoided.

Additionally, I would like to add the following point: The screws and connections of the METOD fronts should not be neglected during maintenance. Moisture that gets into gaps can cause wooden parts to swell over time or lead to mold growth.

For this reason, I recommend trying to avoid soaking the fronts during cleaning and always drying them thoroughly afterward. Moisture should not remain in the joints for an extended period. This is especially important in kitchens with high humidity.

It is also advisable to regularly tighten the fasteners, as screws can loosen over time, which affects the stability of the doors.

My experience: For cleaning, I use only lukewarm water with a small amount of dish soap and a soft cloth. Do not use abrasives or alcohol. Never spray fronts directly with water or soak them. Address stains immediately to prevent them from setting in.
