Hello everyone, I would like to use this thread to gather practical DIY ideas for making IKEA Hemnes furniture—especially dressers, tables, and beds—more child-friendly. The goal is to enhance these typically classic and simple pieces with easy methods to make them safer, more durable, and more appealing to children. For example, I am thinking about protection against sharp edges, non-slip surfaces, or integrating playful elements. Does anyone have experience or creative suggestions on materials or techniques to improve Hemnes furniture without significantly changing the appearance or incurring high costs? All tips, from padding to painting, are welcome!

This is a great topic! 😄 I simply added self-adhesive rubber edge protectors to our Hemnes nightstand – they’re very soft and safe. This makes the corners completely harmless for small children! It’s important to choose protective measures that are as discreet as possible so the piece of furniture isn’t altered too much. Also, felt pads under the base to improve grip on the floor can prevent tipping. Just give it a try, it’s even fun – grab your tools and good luck!

For truly safe children's room furnishings with Hemnes, I recommend using clear, water-based safety finishes that are non-toxic but still create a hard, wipeable surface. A combination of edge protection and handle optimization is also advisable: instead of standard knobs, soft, rounded handles can be installed to reduce the risk of injury. Additionally, I recommend retrofitting dresser doors with soft-close dampers to prevent finger pinching. These modifications are easily achievable with basic tools and significantly enhance safety.

As an addition: Besides the safety measures already mentioned, I would recommend securely attaching anti-tip devices to the wall, especially for Hemnes dressers and shelves. According to DIN standards, tip-over safety should be ensured for children's furniture to prevent accidents. Additionally, for beds with low entry, flexible foam side cushions can be installed, which are easy to remove and washable. For surface finishing, non-toxic chalk paints can be used to give the furniture a child-friendly appearance without limiting its functionality.

Hello taujo33, it’s great that you are approaching this topic in such detail because safety must always come first when it comes to children’s furniture. Besides edge protectors and anti-tip devices, you should also check the stability, especially since children often like to climb. For the tabletops of Hemnes tables, I have used felt or neoprene pads myself, which not only provide protection but also reduce noise. It is also very important to avoid protruding or screw-in parts that could come loose. If the piece of furniture is to be painted, make sure to use certified, low-emission paints that are free of solvents. If you have any questions about implementation, I’m happy to help!

In summary, I consider the following points the most important DIY modifications to make IKEA Hemnes furniture child-friendly:
- Protecting corners with soft edge guards made of silicone or rubber
- Using non-toxic, low-emission sealants or paints
- Installing anti-tip devices to secure furniture to the wall
- Replacing sharp-edged handles with rounded alternatives
- Adding felt pads to stabilize and cushion table edges
These measures can be implemented with minimal technical knowledge and provide a good balance of safety, functionality, and appearance.
