Hello everyone, I am currently exploring different ways to customize or modify Ikea Brimnes furniture pieces using DIY guides. I am particularly interested in practical, well-documented projects related to the Brimnes series, such as dressers, beds, or cabinets. Does anyone here know of instructions or experience reports on how to change the color, structurally expand, or functionally enhance Brimnes items? Tips on suitable materials or tools that work especially well are also welcome. Therefore, my question is: What DIY guides exist for Ikea Brimnes that add value without fundamentally damaging the furniture?

There are DIY guides available for Brimnes wardrobes that show how to add sliding doors with mirrors. Painting the dressers is also popular, preferably using acrylic paint over a wood primer. Extensions such as additional shelves inside work well with standard angle brackets.

The desire to customize Brimnes furniture is understandable. Especially with the dresser, the following DIY options are possible:
- Removing the original front panels and replacing them with solid wood or MDF panels to achieve a higher-quality look. Careful measuring and sanding are recommended here.
- Painting: Instead of spray paint, chalk or lime paint can be used, as these create a matte finish that remains streak-free.
- Interior fittings: Drawer inserts of various sizes are possible, for example, to neatly organize cutlery or tools.
- Lighting: LED strips can be easily installed on the inside of cabinet doors or under shelves. It is important to choose energy-efficient models and ensure proper wiring.
Which piece from the Brimnes series exactly do you want to modify? Then I could provide more targeted advice.

Thanks for the overview, Surela. My initial focus is on the Brimnes chest of drawers with four drawers. When it comes to choosing the color, I prefer a change that can be easily reversed—so rather not a paint that would require mandatory sanding to remove. The idea of using chalk or lime paint sounds interesting; could you briefly explain how well these perform on the relatively smooth MDF surfaces of Ikea furniture? The lighting topic also interests me, but I would rather address that in a second step.

I covered my Brimnes dresser with self-adhesive vinyl, which was really easy and still looks decent after several renovations. Tip: Matte vinyl is perfect for the popular vintage look and protects the surface from scratches. Especially for beginners, it’s a great option that doesn’t require a lot of tools.

I know how challenging it can be to find the right balance between effort and outcome in projects like these. I would be interested to know how important sustainability is to you when choosing materials and methods. Sometimes I notice that DIY projects start off enthusiastically but eventually pause due to lack of time. Which DIY instructions for Brimnes work best with a more relaxed work pace?
