Hello everyone, I am currently considering purchasing some furniture pieces from the IKEA Brimnes series, but I am not sure which type of wood or material IKEA uses for this series. Since I value material quality and sustainability, I would like to understand whether it is solid wood, wood veneer on particleboard, or MDF, and if the latter, which types of wood are included. Are there any differences depending on the piece of furniture? I know IKEA often uses various wood materials, but I can't find clear information about Brimnes. Does anyone here have reliable information or personal experience that could clarify the wood materials used in the Brimnes furniture?
Regarding the question about the type of wood used in the IKEA BRIMNES furniture: IKEA primarily uses particleboard coated with foil or melamine resin in this series. The core material is usually HDF (high-density fiberboard) or MDF, combined with particleboard depending on the component. Solid wood is rarely or not at all used in the BRIMNES series. The outer surface is mostly covered with white melamine foil, which provides a smooth and easy-to-clean finish. The wood used is often spruce or poplar, for example in the frames, but usually only inside and not visible.

Solid wood is hardly or not at all used in the BRIMNES series. I can confirm that – I got the BRIMNES bed storage box, and the finish really feels more like MDF and particleboard, very smooth, almost “plastic-like.” That doesn’t have to be a bad thing, though; it’s still quite durable and easy to maintain. IKEA is simply an expert at producing affordable furniture that is sturdy and consistent. Still, it’s not the typical solid wood furniture look, if that’s what you prefer.
In addition to the previous information: The particle boards used in BRIMNES are mostly made from wood residues or wood fiber materials, allowing for a more sustainable use of resources. The surfaces are covered with a melamine resin foil, which not only provides durability but also determines the appearance. Some pieces of furniture in the series feature frames made of solid wood or MDF for reinforcement, but the majority consists of engineered wood materials with a foil finish. Those who prioritize solid wood should have lower expectations regarding BRIMNES.

I had similar questions at first, especially regarding durability and ecological impact. From my experience with BRIMNES furniture, it seems to be designed more for practical use and good value for money rather than the highest wood quality or elegant solid wood appearance. For someone with these expectations, the choice of material can still be acceptable as long as the limitations are understood.
I believe you shouldn’t expect too much real wood from IKEA furniture. BRIMNES is more of everyday furniture with a simple look and functional design. The combination of particle board and MDF is very typical there! This keeps the price low while still being durable enough for daily use. Of course, you can see the difference compared to solid wood, but hey, it’s great for student apartments or guest rooms!
