Hello everyone, I am planning to buy a piece of furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series, specifically the wardrobe and the chest of drawers. Before making a final decision, I would like to get detailed information about the materials used in the production of the Brimnes furniture. I am especially interested in the quality and composition of the materials, such as types of wood, surface finishes, or other components. Does anyone have precise information or experiences they could share here? Thank you in advance!

The Brimnes series from IKEA mainly consists of particleboard with a melamine coating. It is important to know that the furniture contains no solid wood parts, which keeps the prices low.

In addition to Lidan56, I would like to explain that the particle boards used in IKEA Brimnes are typically coated with a melamine resin-based finish, which makes them resistant to scratches and moisture. The edges are often covered with ABS edging to ensure longer durability. The back panels and interior parts usually consist of thinner fiberboard. IKEA uses cost-effective yet reasonably durable materials that combine an attractive appearance with practical features.

For clarification: The Brimnes series is primarily made from medium- to high-density fiberboard (MDF/HDF) and particleboard. The surfaces are coated with melamine foil, making the furniture water-resistant and relatively scratch-resistant. The edges are either glued or covered with plastic edging, mostly made of ABS. Due to these materials, the furniture is not solid wood but offers solid usability. Cheap solid wood is deliberately avoided here, which affects the durability.

It is interesting that chipboard and melamine foil are repeatedly mentioned here. However, I would like to know to what extent these materials are safe for health, especially regarding possible emissions. Is there any official proof that the chipboard used has low formaldehyde content? Or even certification according to CARB or similar standards? Simply stating that melamine foil is scratch-resistant is not sufficient for me personally.

Good question, which I have not seen answered clearly so far. If possible, please provide expert information or internal IKEA data so that I can place the cabinet in my bedroom without concerns.
