Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series and would like to better understand the properties of the material used in these products. I am especially interested in aspects such as the material composition, how durable it is, any special features regarding the surface, care tips, and how sustainable and environmentally friendly the material is. It would be great if people with experience or more detailed knowledge could share some information to help get a clearer picture. Thanks in advance!

The Brimnes series from Ikea mainly uses a combination of particleboard and MDF (medium-density fiberboard) with a melamine coating. This combination is common and results in a relatively sturdy piece of furniture at an affordable price.

Regarding the surface, the melamine coating is resistant to light scratches but is not completely impervious. Therefore, it is still advisable to be careful with sharp objects. Overall, the material is well-made and offers good value for money. In terms of sustainability: Ikea is increasingly using FSC-certified wood, but specifically for Brimnes, it cannot be generally stated that it is entirely sustainable.

Hey DEOSAN, I think your question is really important! Especially with furniture that’s often associated with mass production, having clear information about the materials is really helpful. 😊

I’ve heard that Brimnes isn’t as vulnerable to moisture as people think – the melamine surface acts like a protective shield. But I still wouldn’t leave wet cloths sitting on it for long.

By the way, if you want to modify something: the particle boards are sturdy, but too much screwing or drilling without care can quickly weaken them.

I completely agree with this. Additionally, I would like to add that MDF boards are especially suitable for decorative coatings due to their smooth surface. Melamine coatings are very low-maintenance and offer some water resistance, but they are vulnerable to sharp or pointed objects, which can cause chipping.

In terms of sustainability, MDF made from wood fibers is often less sustainable than solid wood, but it is more resource-efficient than solid wood because wood residues are used. It is important to note that Ikea promotes certain FSC certifications, although this is not guaranteed for all Brimnes items. For durability, regular care of the surfaces is essential, especially avoiding excessive moisture.

Brimnes is mostly particleboard, MDF, and melamine. Durable but sensitive to moisture and scratches. Care should be done with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

Just to add something: The surface is scratch-resistant but not a full protective film. Therefore, it is best not to use sharp objects directly on it. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents when cleaning.
